The Platforms
1996 → 2026

Thirty model years of Audi & VW run on a handful of Bosch brains — ME7 to MG1, EDC15 to EDC17, and the DSG boxes behind them. Find your era, learn how it's flashed, and see exactly what VAGPULSE can do with it today.

Chapter 8.1

Thirty years of VAG brains

EACH GENERATION ADDS ANOTHER LOCK — HOW HARD IS YOURS TO GET INTO? 19972004 20082013now ME7 / ME7.5 1.8T · 2.7T · V8 K-line, over OBD simple added checksums NO code signing EASIEST — start here MED9.1 2.0 TFSI · VR6 FSI CAN, over OBD first direct injection checksum still the wall HARDER MED17 / EDC17 EA888 · most TDI CAN, OBD or bench TriCore, block CRCs RSA signing appears HARDER STILL SIMOS 18 · MG1 MQB · newest cars locked from the factory signed + tuning-protected bench or boot unlock SPECIALIST WORK The pattern is one-way: every generation adds another lock — a checksum, then a signature, then factory tuning-protection. Older is not worse; older is OPEN. Find yours: the ECU label and the part number tell you which family you have — VAGPULSE reads both off the car. Never assume from the year alone — the same model year often shipped two different ECUs.

Your engine's ECU family — not its badge — decides how it is read and flashed. It follows the year and the fuel: older petrol is ME7, modern petrol is MED / Simos / MG1, and every diesel is an EDC. VAGPULSE reads the real part number off your ECU and picks the right path automatically.

🔒 Honest by design — read everything, write only what's proven

VAGPULSE reads, logs and plans a tune on every family above, all the way back to 1996. It only writes to an ECU whose map locations are verified on real hardware: ME7, ME7.1.1 and EDC15 are flash-validated now; the modern MED/Simos/EDC17 families are read-and-plan while their checksums are validated on the bench — because a wrong write bricks the ECU, and we will never guess with your car. Load a file it doesn't recognise and tuning switches off, with the reason shown, rather than applying another ECU's addresses and hoping.

Chapter 8.2

Which brain is in my car?

You don't have to guess — VAGPULSE reads it. But here's the quick mental model, by era.

Petrol timelineME7 → MED9 → MED17/MG1
1998–2007
Turbo & V8 on ME7 — the golden era for DIY flashing (K-line, fully validated).
2005–2012
First direct-injection TFSI on MED9.1 over CAN — the 2.0T that started the tuning boom.
2010–now
MED17 then MG1 (MQB/MLB), UDS & DoIP, security-gated — huge power, tighter locks.
Diesel timelineEDC15 → EDC16 → EDC17
1999–2006
EDC15 Pumpe-Düse (PD) 1.9 TDI — the tuner's favourite; checksum cracked, flash-validated.
2003–2010
EDC16 — first common-rail 2.0 & 3.0 TDI over CAN.
2008–now
EDC17 common-rail, DPF-era, UDS/DoIP — the modern diesel brain.
1996
oldest year supported (early K-line KWP1281)
2026
newest — UDS-over-CAN reaches nearly every current model

✓ The step that never changes

Whatever the year: connect → read your ECU out → log a full pull → plan the tune to what your car actually showed. On a flash-validated family you then write it and log again; on the newer families you keep the baseline read and the plan, ready for the day its flash path is validated. Same honest workflow from a 2001 1.8T to a 2026 TDI.

🌐 The newest frontier — DoIP

The very latest cars can gate factory programming behind DoIP (diagnostics over Ethernet) and SFD security. Diagnostics, coding and logging still work over the normal OBD-CAN port on almost all of them; full DoIP flashing is the one frontier still being built. If your car needs it, you'll be told plainly — never left guessing.

Read it, then do it

Everything in this chapter is something VAGPULSE does on a real car: read the ECU over OBD, see these same maps by name, and flash a checked file back with your original saved first.
