Every popular Audi & VW engine, one card each: what it powers, its ECU, real Stage 1 & 2 gains, its weak points, and what it responds to. Find your engine, then flip back to the maps and stages to understand its tune.
Two cars that look identical can have different ECUs and different maps. VAGPULSE reads the real part number off your ECU so the right base file and figures are used β never tune off the badge alone. Figures here are typical pump/E85 outcomes and vary by fuel and dyno.
The engine that started the whole VAG tuning scene. Golf GTI/A3/TT/A4 B5. Bulletproof bottom end, endlessly tunable on a bigger K04 turbo. The gateway drug.
MK5 GTI / 8P A3 β the "K04 legend." Strong iron-block engine, huge aftermarket. Direct-injection means the HPFP is the first fuelling wall.
MK6 GTI, 8P A3, B8 A4/A5. Refined and responsive. Gen1/early-Gen2 have the famous timing-chain-tensioner issue to watch.
MK7 GTI, Golf R, Audi S3 8V β the modern tuner's darling. The IS38-turbo cars (R/S3) respond enormously to a flash. Excellent Stage 1 on stock hardware.
RS3 & TT RS β the turbo-five icon with the legendary 1-2-4-5-3 warble. Massively strong; the newer DAZA/DNWA respond hard to software.
Small and fun, but the most fragile of the group β pistons and the twincharger's clutch are the limits. Tune gently.
B5 S4 / C5 A6 β the tuner's darling. Twin small turbos = big software response. VAGPULSE's original proving ground; the ME7.1 maps here are the classic KFMIRL/LDRXN set.
The "pulley game." A smaller supercharger pulley spins the blower faster for more boost β pair it with a tune. Instant response, no lag.
Glorious 8,250-rpm noise β but the NA reality: no boost to unlock, so software alone adds only 10β20 hp (timing + throttle + limiter). Real power needs hardware (headers, cams, or forced induction).
On any naturally-aspirated engine, a flash is a polish, not a transformation. That's not the tune being weak β there's simply no trapped boost to release. This is the clearest proof of Part 1's big idea: power is an air problem.
Diesels tune differently: no spark, no knock β the lever is fuel + boost, and the gains are all torque (great for towing and mid-range punch). The limits are the clutch/DMF and, on modern cars, the DPF and emissions.
A Stage 1 diesel doesn't rev higher β it just makes a wall of extra torque low down. That's the shove you feel merging or towing. It's the same maps idea (more fuel, more boost, raise the limiter) with the spark-timing chapter simply removed.

Everything in this chapter is something VAGPULSE does on a real car: read the ECU over OBD, see these same maps by name, and flash a checked file back with your original saved first.
