The short answer
OBDeleven is a genuinely convenient phone app, and if all you want is the odd coding change from your phone on a car built after about 2008, it is fine. Two things changed in July 2025, though. The pro features moved to a yearly subscription, and the one-click apps that made it famous now cost Credits on top of the PRO plan. So you keep paying to keep using it.
VAGPULSE is a one-time $249 purchase that includes the cable. No subscription, no credits, no per-file fees, no VIN limit — and it does two things no phone coding app does: it reads, backs up and flashes your ECU for Stage 1–3 tuning, and it talks to the K-line cars OBDeleven's current hardware cannot connect to at all.
What OBDeleven actually costs now
These are OBDeleven's own published terms as of September 2026 (their pricing-change notice and plan guide). Check them before buying — they have changed once already.

Over three years of ownership that is roughly €180 on PRO plus whatever Credits you buy, or about €570 on ULTIMATE, on top of the device — for a tool that codes and diagnoses but does not tune. It is not an outrageous price for a phone app. It is a rent, and it is the reason this page exists.
The cars OBDeleven cannot talk to
This is the part the comparison tables leave out. OBDeleven's current devices — the NextGen and OBDeleven 3 — connect over CAN. They do not support K-line vehicles, which OBDeleven's own support pages list by name: Golf Mk4, Passat B5, Audi B6 and "other models of similar years". In practice that is everything before roughly 2008 that speaks K-line only:
- VW Golf and Bora Mk4, Passat B5 and B5.5, Polo 9N, Sharan Mk1, Beetle
- Audi A4 B5 and B6, A6 C5, A3 8L, TT Mk1, S4 B5, RS4 B5, allroad C5
- Skoda Octavia Mk1 and Fabia Mk1, SEAT Leon and Toledo Mk1, Ibiza 6L
- which is to say: the entire 1.8T 20V, 2.7T biturbo and 1.9 TDI PD era
The only OBDeleven route to those cars is the discontinued first-generation device with the legacy app. The VAGPULSE cable carries both a K-line transceiver and a CAN transceiver, so the same tool that codes a Mk7 Golf reads, codes and flashes a Mk4. If you own an older VAG car, this row alone decides it.

Competitor pricing and features change — check their current plans. The rows that do not change are the K-line row, the tuning row and the one-time-price row.
What you get that a phone app can't do
- A full ECU backup before anything is touched. The single most valuable thing most owners never do. The original calibration is the difference between a twenty-minute restore and a very bad week, and no phone app reads it. How to back it up.
- Real Stage 1–3 tuning. Build a map and flash it over the cable with the checksums corrected — on ECU software VAGPULSE has hardware-verified; on anything it hasn't, it refuses and says why. A coding app cannot write a tuned file at all.
- The old cars. K-line and CAN in one cable, so the tool is not obsolete for the Mk4 in the garage or the B5 S4 you have been eyeing.
- Everything in one place. Diagnostics, fault codes, coding, adaptations, live data and tuning in one Windows app, with no per-feature paywall and nothing that stops working when a year ends.
When OBDeleven is still the right call
We won't pretend otherwise. If you drive a CAN-era car, only want occasional coding, and value doing it from your phone with nothing to install, OBDeleven is convenient and cheap to start — and its one-click apps for retrofits and comfort features are genuinely well made, if you are happy to buy Credits for them. VAGPULSE is the better bet when you want to own your tool, skip the rent, work on a laptop, keep an older car in the family, or tune — not just code.
