Why the engine code matters more than the year
Two cars of the same model and year can leave the factory with completely different engines, and almost everything that matters follows the engine rather than the badge: whether it runs a timing belt or a chain, which faults it is prone to, which oil it needs and which parts fit.
That is why a guide can rarely say “all 2012 Golfs are like this”. It is also the single most useful thing to establish before buying parts, paying for a repair quote, or reading anyone's advice about your car online.
The code is stamped on the block and printed in the service book. It is also held electronically in the engine control unit, which is the quickest place to read it from.
