What is a PR code on a VW or Audi?

A PR code is a three-character option code that says what the factory fitted to that specific car - the brake variant, the suspension, the radio, and so on. Every VW Group car has a build sticker listing them.

Where to find your PR codes

Every VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT leaves the factory with a build sticker listing its options as three-character codes. It is usually in one of three places, and there are normally two identical copies of it:

In the service book or handbook wallet, often on the back page.
Under the boot floor, next to or underneath the spare wheel.
On some models, in the spare wheel well itself or on the boot lid trim.

The sticker also carries the vehicle identification number, the model code and the paint and trim codes. The long block of three-character groups is the part this tool decodes. If the sticker is missing, the same option list can be read out of the car electronically, which is what a diagnostic tool does.

Your VIN identifies your car personally, so think before posting a photo of the whole sticker in public. The PR codes on their own are harmless - they only describe equipment.

What the codes are good for

Knowing what the factory actually fitted answers questions that are otherwise guesswork:

Buying parts. Brake discs, dampers and headlights come in variants. The PR code tells the parts counter which one your car has instead of you measuring it.
Checking a used car matches its advert. The sticker does not lie about whether the car left the factory with the towbar prep, the upgraded brakes or the sports suspension.
Retrofits and coding. Knowing what is already fitted, and what the car was built to accept, is the first step before changing any module coding.
Servicing. Suspension, brake and gearbox variants change the parts and sometimes the procedure.
