EDC17 1.6TDI
Bosch EDC17 diesel common-rail (EDC17C46 and EDC17C64) — VAG EA189 / EA288 1.6 TDI CR. Small-displacement economy diesel (Polo/Golf/Jetta, A1/A3, Ibiza/Leon, Fabia/Octavia). C46 = earlier EA189 EU5 (approx 2009-2014); C64 = later EA189 EU5/EU6 and EA288 (approx 2013-2019). Canonical VAG part-number families: 03L906023xx (EA189-era) and 04L906021xx (EA288-era) — always tie the definition to the exa
The ECU hardware
EDC17C46: Infineon TriCore TC1767, ~2 MB internal PFLASH (0x200000) + DFLASH used as emulated EEPROM, little-endian. EDC17C64: Infineon TriCore — most VAG builds TC1793, some TC1797 (both ~4 MB dual-bank PFLASH, 180 nm AUDO-Future TriCore) + DFLASH, little-endian. No external NOR on these VAG builds — all calibration is on internal flash. The exact die must be confirmed from the SW dump / ECU markings per build; do not assume from the family name alone.

How this ECU is read and flashed
OBD (UDS over CAN): calibration read/write (and on many C46, full read/write) via tools using UDS SecurityAccess SA2 seed-key (VAG SA2 bytecode from the A2L); e.g. PCMflash VAG EDC17 module, KESS3, Foxflash, Autotuner. Some C64 SW blocks full OBD read and/or has an RSA program signature — do cal via OBD and the full bin via bench. BENCH: open the ECU, bench-power it, and access the TriCore internal flash via the boot/BSL pads on the PCB — full R/W of TC1767/TC1793/TC1797, needed for virgin/recovery and to bypass OBD gating. BOOT MODE (BSL): Infineon TriCore BootStrap Loader over the boot pins; some later variants have password-protected BSL. IMMO/security: immobilizer + component protection live in DFLASH/emulated EEPROM (synced to cluster PIN/CS); a normal cal tune doesn't touch it, but ECU swap/clone needs immo-off/virginize + adaptation (Abrites/AVDI-class). Always keep a full stock backup before writing and verify the read-back after any boot/bench write.

Staging - what each stage really gives
- stage1 - Software only, DPF/EGR left functional (road/legal). Edit chain, all in lockstep: pedal/driver-wish, torque limiter + torque/IQ MONITORING (Level-2), IQ limiter + smoke limiter (in step with logged air), boost target + N75/VNT duty, rail pressure, SOI/timing (small advance). Typical honest gains, limited by the small VNT and clutch: ~90 PS -> ~115-120 PS and ~250->250-285 Nm; ~105 PS -> ~130-140 PS and ~250->290-310 Nm (roughly +25-35 hp, +50-70 Nm). On DSG/DQ200 cars cap torque lower than a manual to stay inside dry-clutch capacity.
- stage2 - Stage 1 recalibrated for bolt-ons: high-flow intake, larger front-mount intercooler, freer-flow exhaust/downpipe (decat/DPF-off is emissions-illegal on the road in most regions — flag, don't perform by default), optional EGR management. On a 1.6 the small VNT is the ceiling, so gain over Stage 1 is modest (~+5-10 hp) — mainly cleaner, more sustainable delivery and lower EGT. Re-log smoke/AFR and EGT after any airflow change and re-trim the smoke limiter.
- stage3 - Hardware: hybrid/larger VNT turbo, flowed/uprated injectors + HPFP headroom, uprated clutch/DMF (or a DSG clutch-pack limited to its rating), bigger intercooler; ~150-180 hp is possible but rare and uneconomic on a 1.6 economy diesel, and gated hard by the DQ200 clutch, DMF, DPF and injector limits. Full custom map with wideband-lambda and EGT logging is mandatory.
Safety limits
- Rail pressure: stay within pump/injector rating — ~1500-1600 bar stock class on the 1.6 solenoid CR; keep headroom below the relief/limiter and do not chase sustained max (over-pressure = pump/injector failure).
- EGT (pre-turbine): keep sustained below ~780-800 degC, brief peaks below ~830-850 degC; over-EGT melts pistons and cooks the turbine — the primary diesel power ceiling. Log it with a real pre-turbo probe, do not trust the model alone.
- Smoke / AFR: never fuel beyond available (logged) air — keep full-load lambda above ~1.15-1.2 with minimal visible smoke; over-fuel = soot, EGT spike, DPF overload.
- Treat this as the diesel equivalent of a knock limit.
- DPF: keep soot load within what regen can clear; excessive fuelling/backpressure causes blocked-DPF derates. Don't delete on road cars (illegal, and it breaks the soot model).
- Turbo (small VNT): limit peak boost to roughly +0.2-0.3 bar over stock target; watch compressor surge and vane overspeed / overboost DTC.
- Torque + injection-quantity monitoring: raise the torque limiter, IQ limiter and the Level-2 monitoring comparator in LOCKSTEP or the ECU derates to limp; keep peak torque within engine mechanical limits (~250-300 Nm class for 1.6 internals).
- Driveline: DQ200 dry DSG clutch and the manual clutch/DMF are ~250 Nm class, and the DQ200 protection is enforced by the TCM independently of the engine map — exceeding it causes clutch slip / gearbox fault. Cap requested torque (lower on DSG than manual) accordingly.
- Always re-correct ALL checksums (dual/twin on C64) after every edit and keep a verified full stock backup — a bad or single-only checksum bricks the ECU.
