EDC17C46 2.0TDI CR
Bosch EDC17C46 — VAG 2.0 TDI common-rail diesel, EA189 generation (the 'clean-diesel'/dieselgate-era 4-cyl). EDC17C54 is a RELATED but NOT-identical sibling: a larger-package / higher-flash variant used on bigger-airflow apps (e.g. VW Crafter/Amarok 2.0 BiTDI) — treat its silicon, flash size and file layout as DIFFERENT from C46 and confirm per part number; do not assume 'same as C46'. Broader EDC
The ECU hardware
EDC17C46: Infineon TriCore TC1767 — single-core 32-bit, ~2 MB internal program flash (PFLASH) + ~128 KB SRAM, on-chip DFLASH used for EEPROM emulation (immo/adaptation/counters/learned values). Little-endian. PFLASH mapped ~0x8000_0000 (cached) / 0xA000_0000 (non-cached); DFLASH ~0xAF00_0000 (verify exact map per device). Security: TProt (flash read/write protection) + OCDS debug password on JTAG; later SW builds add a BSL password. CAUTION on C54: EDC17C54 is generally NOT the same silicon — the higher-flash EDC17 variants use a larger TriCore (TC1793-class, ~4 MB PFLASH), so the '2 MB / TC1767' figures are specific to C46 (and CP14). Confirm the controller and flash size from the real ECU/part number before choosing read method or file size.
Fuelling and load sensing
Diesel — 2.0 L (and 1.6 L) TDI common-rail, EA189. SOLENOID injectors on EA189 (not piezo), ~1600-1800 bar peak rail. Single VNT/VTG turbo; EDC17C54's bi-turbo apps (Crafter/Amarok 2.0 BiTDI) add a second turbo + sequential control. Cooled EGR + DPF; some markets/later cars add SCR/AdBlue. Combustion is AIR-LIMITED: fuel is metered against available air mass by the smoke limiter (over-fuel vs air = soot/EGT), the opposite discipline to petrol knock/AFR tuning — there is no stoich-AFR target at full load, only 'as much fuel as the air can burn cleanly within EGT/smoke/lambda limits'.
How this ECU is read and flashed
OBD (UDS on CAN): enter programming/bootloader session (0x10), SecurityAccess 0x27 seed/key (TProt), RequestDownload 0x34 / TransferData 0x36 / RequestTransferExit 0x37; read via ReadMemoryByAddress 0x23 (often excludes/pads the protected bootloader). Tools: KESSv2/KESS3, MPPS, CMDflash, Autotuner, FoxFlash, Magic Flex, PCMflash. BENCH (recommended for the full image incl. bootloader): open ECU, bench power + bench connector, TriCore BSL. BOOT MODE: force TriCore BSL by grounding the boot-config pin on the MCU — full read/write incl. bootloader, recovers bricks (PCMflash Infineon-TriCore-BSL module — verify module number; DimSport Trasdata boot/BDM; FoxFlash/Autotuner bench). IMMO/SECURITY: EDC17 carries VAG IMMO (IMMO4 on EA189/PQ; IMMO5 on later MQB) MAC-challenge + component protection; DFLASH holds immo/adaptation data. Flashing CALIBRATION does NOT require immo-off; ECU swaps require immo alignment/adaptation + component-protection clearing. Later SW adds a BSL password (bench/boot then also needs the password or a tool profile that supplies it).

Staging - what each stage really gives
- stage1 - Software only, 100% stock hardware. Raise IQ limiter + smoke limiter + boost target + rail pressure modestly, extend torque limiters (absolute + gearbox + driver-demand + torque<->IQ) in lockstep, light timing optimisation. Typical: 2.0 TDI 140 PS -> ~170-175 PS / ~320 -> ~380-400 Nm; 170 PS -> ~200-205 PS / ~430-450 Nm. WATCH: the ~400 Nm Stage-1 figure already MEETS/EXCEEDS the ~350 Nm stock 02Q manual and DQ250 DSG clutch rating — clutch slip is a known Stage-1 outcome on the higher-torque cals, so cap torque to hardware or advise a clutch. Air is the ceiling (no hardware change): keep the smoke limiter/EGT in check and never chase fuel past available MAF.
- stage2 - Bolt-ons + re-optimised map. Typical hardware: higher-flow intake, uprated intercooler, downpipe, and (OFF-ROAD/where legal) DPF/EGR removal; re-tune fuel/boost/smoke/timing for the added airflow. Typical: 140 -> ~180-190 PS / ~420-440 Nm. Uprated clutch commonly required near/above ~400 Nm.
- stage3 - Hardware-led: hybrid/larger VNT turbo, uprated or larger injectors + HPFP capacity, uprated clutch/DMF (manual) or built/limited DSG, intercooler, exhaust. Full remap incl. injector characteristics, rail pressure, boost/VNT PID and the torque monitor. Typical: ~210-240+ PS / ~450-500+ Nm depending on turbo/injectors. Gains are gated by clutch/gearbox capacity, by engine mechanical limits, and by smoke/EGT — fuel must never outrun the (now larger) air supply.
Safety limits
- Rail pressure: keep <= ~1800 bar (system/injector/HPFP rating); avoid sustained pressure-relief-valve operation — overpressure accelerates pump wear and can cause fuel-in-oil dilution.
- Pre-turbine EGT: sustained < ~800 C (brief peaks < ~830 C) — turbine/manifold and piston-crown limit. Controlled primarily by keeping fuel within available air (smoke limiter).
- Air/fuel (smoke): full-load lambda must stay lean enough (roughly >= 1.15-1.2). NEVER raise the IQ or smoke-limiter maps beyond what the MAF/turbo can actually feed — over-fuel = black smoke, soot loading, EGT spike, DPF overload, bore wash.
- Boost: keep target/limit MAP inside the turbo compressor map and below the overboost-fault / turbo-overspeed threshold (stock VNT peaks typically ~2.3-2.5 bar absolute); tame VNT duty to avoid boost spikes/overspeed at altitude.
- Torque monitor / clutch protection: never exceed clutch/gearbox rating — manual 02Q clutch ~350 Nm, DQ250 (02E) wet DSG ~350 Nm. Raise gearbox/clutch-protection torque limiters ONLY to real hardware capability (note Stage-1 can already reach ~400 Nm).
- Injection timing / peak cylinder pressure: advance SOI only in small steps — excessive advance spikes peak cylinder pressure (mechanical/head-gasket/piston stress), combustion noise and NOx; over-retard hurts EGT and soot. Preserve pilot injection.
- Engine mechanical ceiling: stock EA189 bottom end + stock solenoid injectors realistically top out ~210-240 PS; beyond needs larger injectors/HPFP and accepts rod/piston risk (Stage-3 territory, not a software-only target).
- DMF / driveline: added low-rpm torque stresses the dual-mass flywheel, driveshafts and mounts — ramp torque in smoothly (avoid big low-rpm torque steps) and uprate DMF/clutch alongside the torque.
- DPF/soot: don't over-fuel into the soot model; keep regeneration function intact on road cars. DPF/EGR deletes are emissions-illegal on public roads (off-road/comp use only).
- LOCKSTEP RULE: every IQ or boost increase REQUIRES matching increases to the smoke limiter, the torque limiters (absolute + gearbox + driver-demand) and the torque<->IQ conversion — otherwise the torque monitor clips fuel and sets DTCs (limp). Fuel, air (boost) and torque must move together.

How confident is this?
SOLID: EDC17C46 = Infineon TC1767, ~2 MB internal PFLASH, little-endian, calibration-in-full-image; CRC multipoint + descriptor-table checksums with CALID/CVN over OBD; DAMOS/A2L-in-WinOLS as the authoritative location method; map roles and the fuel<->air(boost)<->torque lockstep discipline; OBD vs bench vs boot/BSL access and the tool set (KESS/MPPS/CMDflash/PCMflash/FoxFlash/Autotuner/DimSport); ~350 Nm 02Q/DQ250 clutch ceiling; diesel EGT/rail/smoke discipline; Stage gain ranges. CORRECTED FROM DRAFT: EDC17C54 is NOT the same silicon as C46 — higher-flash EDC17 variants use a larger TriCore (TC1793-class, ~4 MB), so read method and file size are per-part-number; RSA signing is BUILD-DEPENDENT and mostly ABSENT on classic EA189 C46/CP14 calibration files (don't assume every file is signed); EDC17 siblings differ by package/flash-size and peripherals, NOT by external NOR; Stage-1 ~400 Nm already meets the clutch limit; added peak-cylinder-pressure/timing, engine mechanical-ceiling and DMF/driveline safety limits. THINNER / VERIFY PER FILE: exact engine-code -> ECU part-number mapping (CBEA/CJAA etc. often EDC17CP14, not C46 — confirm by box part number); whether a given SW build c
