ME7.1 V8 4.2
Bosch ME7.1 / ME7.1.1 (Motronic ME7, load/torque-based sequential-SI engine management). Covers the Audi 4.2L V8 40v (5-valve/cyl, PORT-injected/MPI, naturally aspirated) family: S8 D2, A8 D2/D3, S6/A6 C5/C6, plus the 4.2-engined B6/B7 S4 sibling; engine codes AQH/ART/AWN/BBD/ANK/BAS/BAT/BFM — and the biturbo 4.2 V8 RS6 C5 (BCY), which is ME7.1.1 with forced induction. CRITICAL SCOPE NOTE: this ME
The ECU hardware
Bosch ME7.1 (early D2 4.2, same 2.7T-generation silicon) / ME7.1.1 (later 4.2: C6 A6 BAT, D3 A8 BFM, RS6 BCY, B6/B7 S4). 16-bit Infineon/Siemens C167-core (C167CR-class on ME7.1, C167CS-class on ME7.1.1), ~20-40 MHz, with EXTERNAL program+calibration flash (AMD/Fujitsu/ST 29F400-class 512KB or 29F800-class 1MB device) and a SEPARATE serial EEPROM (95040/95160-class) holding immo, VIN, adaptation and SKC/login data. Word/data layout is LITTLE-ENDIAN (Intel byte order). The map/calibration ('Datenstand') region and executable code live in the SAME external flash image — there is no separate cal chip. Immo/security data is NOT in the main flash; it is in the 95xxx EEPROM.
Fuelling and load sensing
Petrol/gasoline, PORT fuel injection (MPI, 40v = 5 valves/cyl), sequential — NOT direct injection (that distinguishes it from the out-of-scope 4.2 FSI/MED9.1). Closed-loop lambda control with pre/post-cat narrowband O2 per bank; full-load open-loop enrichment. NA 4.2 = naturally aspirated; RS6 BCY = twin-turbo (2x small K04-class) with air-to-water intercooling.
How this ECU is read and flashed
READ/WRITE paths: (1) OBD KWP2000 over K-line — NefMoto ME7 Flasher with a dumb FTDI-based KKL/OBD cable reads and writes full or cal-only flash in-car over the OBD port after KWP2000 security access (seed/key login) and entering the flash-program routine. Confirmed for ME7.1, ME7.1.1 and ME7.5 (incl. 4.2 BFM). NefMoto does NOT correct checksums — prepare a checksum-corrected (and RSA-handled) file externally first. (2) BENCH / BOOT MODE — C167 bootstrap-loader (BSL) via a bench harness that GROUNDS the internal boot pin (requires opening the inner metal ECU can to reach the pins; see the Audizine bench-flash/boot-mode harness how-to). This is immo-IMMUNE and gives full read/write; it is the reliable fallback when OBD is locked or a write fails. IMMO/SECURITY: flash PROGRAMMING is gated by KWP2000 security access; IMMO/EEPROM content (SKC/login, VIN, adaptation) lives in the SEPARATE 95040/95160 serial EEPROM and generally requires boot-mode/EEPROM (or direct chip) access to change — reading/altering the main-flash CALIBRATION does NOT require touching immo. RSA/ME7.1.1: the 1024-bit RSA signature is an ADDITIONAL integrity layer in the flash image (corroborated on RS6/4.2 bins) — after any edit it must be handled (ME7Sum experimental RSA correction, verified by ME7check; or, where the signed region excludes the calibration band, cal-only edits leave it intact) or the ECU rejects/limps. It is a layer to respect and verify, not necessarily an insurmountable wall — do not overstate it. ALWAYS keep a known-good backup and a recovery path (second ECU or bench) before writing.

Staging - what each stage really gives
- stage1 - SOFTWARE ONLY (OBD or bench reflash). NA 4.2 (S6/S8/A8/A6): ignition optimization (KFZW/KFZWOP), mild full-load lambda lean (LAMFA), raised torque-model/limiter ceilings kept COHERENT (KFMIRL + KFMIOP + KFMIZUFIL/KFMIZUOF together), sharper pedal/throttle map, optional rev/speed-limiter tweak. Realistic gain is SMALL — roughly +10-25 hp / +15-25 Nm; the NA 40v 4.2 is a low-yield software platform, set expectations accordingly. RS6 BCY: raise LDRXN load/boost target + KFLDIMX/KFLDRL duty + timing + fueling, torque model in lockstep -> ~500-520 hp from 450 PS stock on stock K04-class turbos with stock intercooling headroom.
- stage2 - BOLT-ONS + software re-tune. NA 4.2: high-flow intake, sport/cat-back exhaust, sometimes headers; re-optimize timing/lambda and RESCALE MLHFM if the intake alters the MAF signal -> another modest ~10-25 hp. RS6 BCY: upgraded intercoolers (the stock air-to-water is the FIRST ceiling), less-restrictive downpipes/exhaust, intake; push boost slightly with headroom + re-cal -> ~540-570 hp.
- stage3 - HARDWARE-LIMITED, custom, full re-cal. NA 4.2: realistically means cams / head work / displacement or forced induction (supercharger/turbo kit) — at that point ME7 is at the edge of its cal flexibility and a standalone or heavily custom map is warranted. RS6 BCY: hybrid/bigger turbos (K24-hybrid class), larger injectors (rescale KRKTE), upgraded fuel supply, and TRANSMISSION uprate — the RS6/S6/S8 are Tiptronic AUTOMATIC (ZF 5HP24A), so this is a torque-converter/valve-body/TCU-torque-limit job, NOT a clutch (only the manual B6/B7 S4 4.2 sibling has a clutch limit). Full re-cal of boost, fueling and torque model -> 600+ hp, where rods/pistons become the mechanical limit.
Safety limits
- Knock: ZERO sustained knock retard (KR) under load. Add ignition ONLY where the knock system shows margin; if timing pulls under load you exceeded it — back off. Alloy 40v heads and the cats are unforgiving. Verify on the car via datalogging, not just the dyno.
- Full-load lambda: NA 4.2 keep ~0.85-0.90 (~12.6-13.2:1), do NOT lean past ~0.90 under high load; RS6 BCY keep RICH ~0.80-0.82 at high boost.
- EGT / pre-cat exhaust temp: keep below ~900-950 C (LAMBTS component-protection model). Do NOT neuter EGT-driven enrichment to chase a number — melted cats (and turbos on RS6) follow.
- Torque-model coherence: KFMIOP (modelled torque) vs the monitoring limiter (KFMIZUFIL/KFMIZUOF, miszul) must stay consistent. Level-1 intervention CLAMPS the request to mimax; level-2 is a TIMING intervention (ignition retard/cut) when actual torque exceeds miszul — raising limiters WITHOUT recalibrating KFMIOP just escalates level-1 -> level-2. Keep KFMIRL/KFMIOP/KFMIZUFIL/KFZWOP in lockstep.
- Fuel system / injector duty (esp. RS6 stage 2/3): keep IDC under ~85-90% and rail/fuel-supply within capacity — out-of-headroom injectors/pump lean the top end and melt pistons. Swapping injectors REQUIRES rescaling KRKTE.
- MAF / airflow ceiling: keep requested load within what the MAF can honestly read — exceeding the top of MLHFM or MAF sensor voltage range clips load and corrupts fueling AND the torque model. Big-airflow mods need an MLHFM rescale or larger MAF.
- Boost (RS6 BCY): stock ~0.7 bar; safe ceiling ~1.0-1.1 bar on stock K04-class turbos WITH adequate intercooling. Watch surge/overspeed, IAT and heat-soak — more boost needs bigger turbos + fueling, not just a higher LDRXN.
- Intake air temp / heat-soak (RS6): stock air-to-water intercooler is the first thermal ceiling; high IAT makes the ECU pull timing — manage IAT before adding boost.
- Fuel octane: added advance assumes a minimum octane (typ. 98 RON premium); the same map WILL knock on lower-grade fuel — do not run aggressive timing on low octane.
- Transmission/driveline: RS6/S6/S8/A8/A6 4.2 are Tiptronic AUTOMATIC (ZF 5HP-class); the TCU enforces its own torque limit and requests torque reduction — exceeding trans capacity causes slip/overheat/limp/failure, so big power needs a TCU/converter upgrade. (Only the manual B6/B7 S4 4.2 sibling has a clutch that will slip before big power.)
- Mechanical: NA 4.2 rods/pistons are fine at stock-ish NA output; forced induction or >~600 hp (RS6) demands built internals. Respect the ~7000-rpm-class limiter.
- Checksums/RSA + recovery: NEVER flash without re-correcting main + multipoint + CRC (ME7Sum) AND, on ME7.1.1, handling the 1024-bit RSA layer, ALL re-verified by ME7check — a bad checksum/RSA limps or bricks the ECU. ALWAYS keep a known-good stock backup and a recovery path (second ECU or bench boot-mode harness) before writing. (DPF/regen limits: N/A — gasoline platform, no particulate filter.)

How confident is this?
SOLID: overall ME7.1/ME7.1.1 architecture, the load/torque-model control philosophy and lockstep (KFMIRL<->KFMIOP<->KFZWOP<->KFMIZUFIL/KFMIZUOF), the multi-layer checksum system (main + multipoint + CRC), the ME7Sum/ME7check workflow, map-vs-axis storage, flash routes (NefMoto OBD KWP2000 verified for ME7.1/7.1.1/7.5 incl. 4.2 BFM + C167 boot-mode bench), the immo boundary (flash vs separate 95xxx EEPROM), and the safety envelope. Corroborated live against s4wiki, nyetwurk/WaylandAce ME7Sum, and NefMoto. CORRECTIONS applied this pass: (a) level-2 torque intervention is a TIMING cut (mibas>miszul), NOT a fuel cut as the draft implied — fixed; (b) KFMIZUFIL/KFMIZUOF are REAL map names (s4wiki), draft was right; (c) all 8 listed engine codes are 40v MPI ME7 (BAT=A6 C6, BFM=A8 D3, AQH=S8 D2, etc.), distinct from the 4.2 FSI 32v (MED9.1) which is OUT OF SCOPE — verified; (d) RS6/S6/S8/A6/A8 4.2 are Tiptronic AUTOMATIC, so the stage-3 'clutch' was corrected to torque-converter/TCU/transmission; (e) added missing safety limits: injector duty/fuel supply, MAF/airflow ceiling, IAT/heat-soak, fuel octane, and transmission torque limit.
