MED17.1 3.0TFSI SC
Bosch MED17.1.1 (torque-based petrol DI engine management) — the ECU for the SUPERCHARGED 3.0 TFSI EA837 V6. A minority of later/variant cars carry MED17.1.6; both are the same MEDC17 architecture and tune identically in principle. An S4/S5 B8/B8.5, Q5/SQ5 8R, C7 A6/A7, D4 A8, and 4L Q7 3.0T will scan as MED17.1.1/.1.6. IMPORTANT scope guard: this is the SUPERCHARGED EA837 platform only (B8/8R/C7/
The ECU hardware
Infineon TriCore 32-bit MCU. MED17.1.1 on the 3.0T ships almost universally on the SAK-TC1796 (verified: tool ECU catalogues list "Bosch MED17.1.1 (TC1796)"); a TC1797 variant exists on some builds and on MED17.1.6. TC1796 = 2 MB internal program flash (PFLASH, mapped 0x0–0x1FFFFF) + internal data flash (DFLASH, ~128 KB in two banks) for adaptation/immobilizer; NO external code flash on this generation. Core is little-endian. Entry points: factory OBD (UDS/KWP2000 over CAN, TP2.0), Bosch bench connector, and the TriCore BSL/boot-ROM (boot pin). Note: TC1796 has 2 MB PFLASH; TC1797 has 4 MB — confirm the part before assuming dump size.

How this ECU is read and flashed
Read/write via three routes. (1) OBD — the tuning norm for this platform: 034 Motorsport, APR (via APR's patented DirectPort Programming — NOT 'Ultralink', which is APR's separate datalogging/gauge module), Integrated Engineering (IE), and GIAC all flash cal+program over the factory OBD-II port (UDS/KWP2000 over CAN, TP2.0) with no ECU removal and can flash back to stock. (CORRECTION: Cobb does NOT support this supercharged EA837 platform — Cobb's Audi 3.0T Accessport is only the newer B9/B9.5 S4/S5/SQ5, which is the TURBO EA839, a different ECU.) OBD stock reads are often a 'virtual' read (reconstructed from software ID + cal) rather than a byte-true dump. (2) Bench — power the ECU on the bench and use the Bosch bench connector / TriCore BSL with KT200/FoxFlash/KESS3/CMD for a full verified read/write (bench boot/BSL enable pin per the tool's MED17.1.1 pinout). (3) Boot — ground the TriCore boot pin and enter Infineon TriCore boot mode (driver = INFINEON TRICORE Boot → SAK TC1796 / SAK TC1797) for the true full 2 MB dump and recovery of a bricked/locked unit. Security: many MED17.1.1 carry TPROT ('Tprot') write-protection — bench/OBD may be refused and boot mode + a TPROT password (tool protocol names such as 'OBD PASSWORD TPROT V08' for TC1796, BFT-class for TC1797) is needed to read/write. Immobilizer + VAG Component Protection sit in DFLASH/EEPROM and are kept dealer-matched for tuning; immo-off is a separate EEPROM-dump edit with its own checksum and is NOT part of a normal performance flash.
Engine codes in this family
- CAKA — 245 kW / 333 hp, 440 Nm — S4 B8/B8.5, S5 B8.5 (Sportback/cabrio). The common enthusiast target.
- CCAA / CAJA — ~213 kW / 290 hp — early 3.0 TFSI, A6 C6 (2008–2011).
- CGWB — 220 kW / 300 hp — C7 A6/A7 (lower-output SC cal).
- CGWD (= CGXB) — ~228 kW / 310 hp — C7 A6/A7 / A8 D4 (higher-output SC cal).
- CTXA — 260 kW / 354 hp, 470 Nm — SQ5 8R (first-gen SQ5 TFSI; US code). CORRECTION: the SQ5 is CTXA, NOT CTUA/CTUC/CTVA — those are the non-S Q5 8R 3.0 TFSI (~200–200+ kW).
- CTWA / CTWB — Q7 4L (first-gen) 3.0 TFSI supercharged (CTWA 245 kW/333 hp, CTWB 206 kW/280 hp). CORRECTION: the supercharged Q7 is the 4L, NOT the 4M — the 4M Q7 3.0T is the turbo EA839.
- CGWA / CREC — A8 D4 3.0 TFSI supercharged.
- (All are the EA837 supercharged block/ECU family; they differ mainly by calibration/output target, not hardware.)
Staging - what each stage really gives
- stage1 - Software only, stock hardware and stock ~63.2 mm SC pulley. Optimize ignition, fueling (lambda + rail pressure), load request and torque limiters within the factory blower's airflow. ~333 hp → ~370–400 hp with a large torque/mid-range gain (APR quote ~336 whp + up to ~77 whp / 65 lb-ft through the band); on the low-output CGWB (300 hp) the jump is larger. On automatic cars a TCU tune is REQUIRED in lockstep so the gearbox accepts the extra torque — DL501 (0B5) S-tronic on the S4/S5, or the ZF 8-speed AL551 (0BK/0C8) Tiptronic on Q5/SQ5/A6/A7/A8/Q7. 6-speed manual (S4/S5 only) is fine on the stock clutch to its mechanical limit. Pump gas; fully reversible via flash-back-to-stock.
- stage2 - Stage 1 calibration + bolt-ons: smaller/overdrive SC pulley (~63.2 mm → ~57.5–57.7 mm; 034 = 57.70 mm, APR = 57.75 mm, ~9.5% faster blower), usually a matching reduced crank pulley (dual-pulley pushes ~26% faster), upgraded water-to-air charge cooler / heat exchanger + reservoir, intake, and downpipes/exhaust. Software re-scaled for the extra mechanical airflow (fill/VE + MAF, timing, lambda, rail pressure). ~420–470 hp; dual-pulley packs push higher. Cooling and IAT become the limiter — the charge-cooler upgrade is what makes the power sustainable and keeps the Eaton TVS1320 within its efficient speed range. TCU tune still required on autos.
- stage3 - Hardware-limited big power: aggressive pulley / higher-flow or swapped SC, upgraded HPFP and larger/higher-flow injectors (add fuel-system margin before airflow), full exhaust, and transmission/clutch support (DL501 built or clamping tune; ZF8 clamping/limit tune; manual clutch upgrade). Real-world builds reach ~500–540+ hp / ~490–700 Nm. Stock internals are broadly comfortable to ~500–550 hp; beyond that needs forged rods/pistons. Fuel-system and driveline capacity — NOT the ECU — set the ceiling.
Safety limits
- WOT lambda: target ~0.80–0.85 (~11.5–12.5:1 AFR); NEVER lean under load — >~0.90 lambda at WOT on this DI supercharged engine invites knock, exhaust-valve/cat damage. Use enrichment, not leaning, to hold safety margin.
- Knock / detonation: keep sustained knock retard minimal in logs and run octane-appropriate timing (SEPARATE 91/93/98 maps). Do not chase timing that produces continuous knock correction — detonation risks ring-lands/pistons. (CORRECTION: the 3.0T V6 does NOT have the 2.0T EA888 Gen3 cylinder-scuffing/scoring problem; that concern was misattributed. The real 3.0T weak points are elsewhere — see the chain/carbon item.)
- EGT: keep exhaust gas temps roughly under ~950–980 °C to protect exhaust valves and catalysts; hold temps with enrichment/timing-pull, never by leaning.
- Charge-air / IAT: the Roots-type Eaton TVS1320 blower adds heat — a too-small pulley without an upgraded water-to-air charge cooler spikes IAT and forces timing pull; keep post-cooler IAT controlled and honor IAT-based timing correction, especially on back-to-back pulls / heat soak.
- HPFP / rail pressure: do NOT command rail pressure or airflow beyond stock HPFP (~450 L/h) capacity — running the pump out of fuel goes lean under load. Upgrade pump/injectors before adding airflow; keep injector duty under ~90–95%.
- Torque-monitor lockstep: raise KFMIRL / KFMIOP / the max-fill ceiling AND the torque-monitor thresholds TOGETHER; exceeding the level-2 torque monitor without raising it is a fuel cut / limp, not just lost power — the #1 cause of a faulting raised tune.
- Supercharger overspeed / belt: undersizing the pulley over-speeds the TVS1320 (efficiency collapse, heat) and can slip the belt — respect the blower's efficient speed range and the ~7,200 rpm engine redline the pulley suppliers design to; the SC/accessory belt is a service item (~120,000 km / 75k mi, sooner when tuned).
- Transmission — model-specific (CORRECTED): the automatic is the ZF 8-speed AL551 (0BK/0C8) Tiptronic torque-converter on Q5/SQ5/A6/A7/A8/Q7 3.0T, and the DL501 (0B5) 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch ONLY on the S4/S5 B8/B8.5. The TCU's input-torque / clutch-clamping limit — not the engine — caps a flashed auto until the TCU is tuned in lockstep. 6-speed manual (S4/S5 only): the clutch friction limit is the mechanical cap.
- Stock internals: broadly safe to ~500–550 hp / high-500s Nm; beyond that needs forged rods/pistons. Keep coolant and oil temps in range and shorten oil/plug intervals on a tuned car.
- Maintenance / longevity on a tuned 3.0T: the timing-chain tensioners/guides sit at the REAR of the engine and become a high-mileage weak point (labor-intensive, often engine-out) — inspect on a high-mileage car before adding sustained torque; and DI intake-valve carbon buildup (on cars without added port injection) skews airflow assumptions, so walnut-blast as needed. Keep the CVN/checksum valid after every edit or the ECU flags integrity DTCs / may limp.
- Fuel quality: do not run below the map's design octane — knock protection on this engine is calibration-dependent, and a tune built for 98/93 will detonate on lower-octane fuel.

SOLID (well-corroborated): ECU family/silicon (MED17.1.1 on Infineon TC1796, ~2 MB internal PFLASH, LE core; TC1797 variant); the multi-block CRC32(+ADD32/ADD16)/CVN checksum model and how tuned files are re-corrected; that the 3.0T-era MED17.1.1/.1.6 is CHECKSUM-ONLY with NO RSA signature (RSA/Bleichenbacher belongs to later signed Bosch/the turbo EA839 — a corrected point); read/write access (OBD via 034/APR-DirectPort/IE/GIAC, plus bench and TriCore boot; TPROT); the torque-based tuning philosophy and which map GROUPS a real tune touches; supercharged staging, pulley sizes (~63.2→~57.5–57.7 mm) and gains; the Eaton TVS1320 blower; and the safety envelope.
