MED17.5 2.0TFSI EA888g3
EA888 Gen3 (2.0 TFSI, MQB) — VW Golf 7/7.5 GTI & R, Audi S3 8V/8V.5 & A3, Seat/Cupra Leon 5F, Skoda Octavia RS. This entry covers the BOSCH MED17.5.20/.21 petrol DI-turbo ECU — but the SAME cars also shipped the Continental Simos18.1/18.10 (and later MG1CS002) depending on market/model-year/plant, and those need a completely different toolchain/definitions. ALWAYS confirm the actually-fitted ECU a
The ECU hardware
Bosch MED17.5.20 / MED17.5.21. MCU = Infineon TriCore, most commonly TC1793 (AUDO-MAX, 32-bit, little-endian, ~4 MB internal PFLASH); some builds are TC1791 (~2 MB) or TC1797 (~4 MB) — confirm per unit via BSL/JTAG, do not assume. PFLASH @0x80000000 (cached) / 0xA0000000 (uncached) + on-die DFLASH (adaptives, immo / component-protection, DTC memory). Typical VAG box-code prefixes 06K906xxx / 8V0906xxx / 5G0906xxx, but read the exact SW/box code per car: it selects which DAMOS/A2L applies AND is how you confirm this is a Bosch MED17.5 and not a Continental Simos18 sitting in the same chassis.
Fuelling and load sensing
Petrol/gasoline, direct injection (TFSI), single-scroll turbo (IS20 on GTI, IS38 on Golf R / S3 / Cupra 300). HPFP-fed DI, ~200 bar rail target. Late Gen3B adds combined port+DI (MPI+DI) dual injection, but the MED17.5.20/.21 era is predominantly DI-only, so DI fuel-supply ceiling (HPFP + injector duty) is the hard fuelling limit at high power.
Engine codes in this family
- CHHB (Golf 7 R / Audi S3 8V, IS38, ~300 PS)
- CJXC (Audi S3 / Cupra, IS38, ~300 PS)
- DKZA (Golf 7.5 R / Cupra, IS38 — verify per car)
- DNPA (S3 8V.5 facelift — verify)
- CNTC (listed as Golf R facelift — LOW CONFIDENCE, verify against the actual VAG code)
- DAJB (GTI Performance, IS20 — verify)
- CXCB / CXDA (GTI ~220 PS, IS20 — same MED17.5.20 family)
- CHHA (GTI Performance ~230 PS, IS20)
Staging - what each stage really gives
- stage1 - Software only, 100% stock hardware, pump gas (95/98 RON or 91/93 AKI; higher-octane maps make more). Edits: raise KFMIRL load target + LDRXN clamp, lift boost limit (LDIMX) and re-tune LDR boost control, add ignition (KFZW), enrich WOT lambda (LAMFA), and lift the torque-monitor/limiter ceilings in lockstep (+ DSG TCU clutch-torque limit on auto cars). GTI (IS20): ~+55–75 hp → roughly 275–300 PS crank / ~245–260 whp. Golf R / S3 (IS38): ~+70–90 hp → roughly 360–385 PS crank / ~320–345 whp. Intake + upgraded intercooler recommended for heat/timing consistency but not strictly required.
- stage2 - Bolt-ons + matching software: high-flow downpipe / de-cat (note GPF cars — see safety limits), intake, upgraded intercooler (FMIC), colder spark plugs (one heat range), often a turbo-inlet/TIP. Software sustains more boost on the freer-flowing exhaust. GTI IS20: ~320–340 PS crank. Golf R / S3 IS38: ~400–430 PS crank. Same lockstep torque-limit + DSG clutch-limit raises apply; watch DI fuelling headroom.
- stage3 - Hardware turbo + fuelling + driveline: on GTI typically the OEM IS38 swap ('Stage 2+') or a hybrid/aftermarket turbo (TTE/Pure/Garrett) on R/S3, plus upgraded HPFP and/or aftermarket port injection or larger injectors, uprated intercooler/exhaust, often E85/ethanol blends, and a DSG clutch-limit tune or upgraded/uprated clutch (or manual clutch). ~450–550+ PS crank depending on turbo/fuel. REQUIRES raising DSG (DQ250/DQ381) clutch-torque protection or fitting a stronger clutch, a full torque-model rescale for the new airflow, AND at this power the stock connecting rods become the mechanical limit — forged rods are effectively mandatory above the stock-rod threshold (see safety limits).
Safety limits
- Knock: keep knock-correction / ignition-retard minimal and TRANSIENT — sustained knock retard means KFZW is too high for the fuel; back off timing and add fuel rather than chase peak numbers.
- WOT lambda / AFR: command rich, ~0.80–0.85 λ (≈11.8–12.5 AFR) at full load; never allow lean-out under boost (λ > ~0.90 at high load risks knock + piston/turbine damage). Enrichment is the primary EGT protection.
- if EGT climbs, enrich and/or pull timing — do not out-tune the exhaust thermal limit.
- LSPI (low-speed pre-ignition): DI turbo engines are prone to LSPI at high load / low rpm — do NOT aggressively raise load (KFMIRL/LDRXN) in the low-rpm, high-load region; keep low-rpm boost onset progressive, use quality fuel and the correct-heat-range plugs, and avoid lugging. One LSPI event can hole a piston.
- Boost + MAP-sensor range: IS20 up to ~22–24 psi, IS38 ~26–30 psi peak; avoid compressor surge/overspeed. CRITICAL: the stock boost/MAP sensor saturates around ~2.5–3.0 bar-abs (verify per car) — IS38 peak boost can exceed it, and a clipped MAP signal makes the fuel/timing model go blind. Fit a higher-range (e.g. 4-bar) sensor and rescale before running boost that saturates the stock sensor.
- Rail pressure / DI fuelling: DI rail ~200 bar target; do not command fuel beyond HPFP + injector capacity (keep injector duty < ~85–90%) or mixture goes lean under load. This is the hard fuelling wall — Stage 3 needs an upgraded HPFP and/or port injection / larger injectors.
- Mechanical rod/piston limit: the stock EA888 Gen3 cast pistons and (especially) connecting rods are the well-known failure point — stock rods are generally reliable only to roughly ~450–480 hp / ~400–450 lb-ft; beyond that they bend/fail. Forged rods (and usually forged pistons) are effectively mandatory for higher-turbo Stage 3 power regardless of how clean the tune is.
- Torque monitor: raised load (KFMIRL/LDRXN) MUST be matched by higher torque-limiter/monitor ceilings and a consistent KFMIOP, or the ECU throttles / limp-modes and throws torque-deviation DTCs.
- DSG clutch protection: DQ250 clutch limit is ~350 Nm class (DQ381 higher) — requested torque above the TCU clutch limit gets clamped or slips the clutch; raise the TCU limit (separate flash) or upgrade the clutch BEFORE Stage 2/3 torque.
- IAT / heat soak: watch intake-air-temp-based timing pull; on a stock intercooler (Stage 1/IS38) repeated pulls quietly reduce real-world output — size the intercooler for the boost.
- GPF/OPF (era-dependent): MED17.5.20/.21-era cars are largely PRE-GPF, but later Gen3B / facelift builds carry a gasoline particulate filter — on those, do not ignore the soot/regen model, and note that de-cat / GPF-delete is emissions-illegal and can trigger backpressure/regen faults. Confirm whether the specific car has a GPF before spec'ing a downpipe.
- Oil & coolant temperature: sustained high-load tuning raises oil/coolant temps — monitor them and add cooling (oil cooler / uprated coolant) for track/Stage 3; heat-soaked oil accelerates the LSPI and bearing risk above.
- HPFP cam-follower / DI maintenance: raised rail pressure loads the HPFP cam follower — inspect/replace it and address DI intake-valve carbon on higher-power builds; a worn follower can wipe the intake cam.
- Never leave checksums / signature unresolved: a mis-corrected CRC/sum (or a broken RSA signature) bricks or limp-modes the ECU — always re-run checksum correction, keep signed code intact on CAL-only tunes, and verify against a full stock backup before flashing. Always take a full stock backup first.

How confident is this?
SOLID: engine-code↔chassis mapping, the Bosch torque-structure map roles and the KFMIRL/LDRXN/KFMIOP + torque-monitor + DSG-clutch lockstep, the multi-layer CRC32-descriptor + additive-sum integrity model and how a CAL-only tune is re-corrected while signed code stays intact, the OBD-vs-bench-vs-boot access model + tprot behaviour, staging power bands, and the safety envelope (knock/lambda/EGT/LSPI/rods/clutch). MEDIUM / VERIFY-PER-CAR: (a) the ACTUAL fitted ECU — MK7/MK7.5 GTI/R shipped BOTH Bosch MED17.5.20/.25 AND Continental Simos18.1/18.10 depending on market/model-year/plant, and the toolchain differs entirely, so confirm the ECU + box code before assuming Bosch; (b) the MCU part — most MED17.5.20/.21 are TC1793 (AUDO-MAX, 4 MB) but TC1791 (2 MB) / TC1797 builds exist — confirm via BSL, and confirm the full-image size accordingly; (c) whether a given build carries RSA (2048/4096) over code and whether the CAL is signature- or only CRC-protected (early builds are often CRC + additive sum + tprot password WITHOUT full RSA on cal); (d) exact tprot cutoffs for OBD vs bench vs boot (moves with dealer SW updates); (e) several facelift engine codes here (CNTC especially, plus DKZA/D
VAGPULSE reads, backs up, tunes and flashes these ECUs over OBD from a Windows laptop - diagnostics, fault codes, coding and Stage 1-3 maps in one app, with your original file saved first and checksums corrected automatically.
