Audi A4 tuning: Stage 1 by generation, B5 to B9
Five A4 generations, very different engine computers. What Stage 1 involves on yours, what it gains, and which A4s you can tune yourself.
Tuning an Audi A4 nearly always means a remap: new software for the engine computer (the ECU) that asks for more boost, fuel and ignition timing. "Stage 1" is that change on an otherwise standard car, and how you get it onto your A4 depends on its engine computer.
The short answer: a B6 or B7 A4 1.8T, and a later B5 1.8T, runs a Bosch ME7.5 engine computer that you can read, tune and write yourself at home through the OBD port. The B7 2.0 TFSI, the B8, B8.5 and B9 and the TDIs use newer engine computers that need a tool built for them. As a guide, Stage 1 typically takes a 150 PS 1.8T to 190 to 205 PS, and a 252 hp B9 2.0 TFSI to roughly 300 to 315 hp.
Which engine computer your A4 has, generation by generation
Your engine code is on the data sticker in the boot floor; where a row lists two engine computers, check the ECU part number with our free decoder. Last column: Full, VAGPULSE reads, backs up, builds and writes a Stage 1 to 3 tune over OBD; File, it builds a Stage 1 to 3 file, checksum corrected, from a file you load, for most software versions (on EDC15, many but not all, so check yours), and another tool writes it; Ask us, it builds a file for only some EDC17 software versions so far, so check with us before buying; Not yet, VAGPULSE cannot build a tune for Continental Simos yet; None, no tuning.

The earliest B5 1.8T cars, engine code AEB, used Bosch Motronic M3.8.2, which is not ME7 and which VAGPULSE does not write, so check your engine code and ECU part number. And on 2016-on MED17, EDC17 and Simos 18 (most B9s), the factory signs the software, so the car may refuse a modified file whatever tool you use.
Typical Stage 1 gains on an A4
For a healthy, standard engine on 98 RON (93 AKI in North America). PS is metric horsepower; the B7 and B9 hp figures come from North American tuners.

No sourced ranges yet for the 1.9, 2.5 and 2.7 TDI, the 1.8 TFSI or the 3.2 FSI, which has no turbo and so little to gain. The 3.0 TDI has its own tuning guide.
The A4 you can tune at home: the B6 and B7 1.8T
The 1.8T 20-valve in the B6, B7 and later B5 uses a Bosch ME7.5 engine computer, so you can tune it start to finish in your driveway with VAGPULSE and its included cable:
- It reads the ECU and saves a backup every time.
- It builds a Stage 1 to 3 map for your exact engine and corrects the checksum (the ECU's integrity check) on tunes it builds, or refuses a file it cannot correct.
- It refuses a file whose part number shows a different ECU, and will not write below 11.8 V or above 13.5 V, so use a battery charger.
- To go back to stock, write your saved backup.
Write tunes VAGPULSE built: a hand-edited map is not yet fully checksum-corrected. Eurodyne Maestro and the free NefMoto ME7 flasher also cover the 1.8T A4. On cars this old, the 1.8T tuning guide checks (oil pickup, diverter valve, coil packs) matter as much as the map.
B7 2.0 TFSI, B8, B8.5 and B9 petrol A4s
From the B7 2.0 TFSI on, A4 petrol engines use Bosch MED9.1, MED17 or Continental Simos. For most MED9.1 and MED17 software versions, VAGPULSE builds a Stage 1 to 3 file, checksum corrected, from a file you load; it cannot build a tune for Simos yet. It does not read or write any of these over OBD; a tool that supports the ECU does that. For the B9, APR, Unitronic and Integrated Engineering all sell Stage 1 software that loads through the OBD port. See the 2.0 TFSI tuning guide and the EA113 and EA888 problems guides.
TDI A4s
Diesel A4s gain mostly torque. On EDC15 (B5, B6), VAGPULSE builds the file for many software versions, not all, so check yours. EDC16 (B7) is a file build on most software versions. On EDC17 (B8, B8.5 and the B9 EDC17C74) it builds files for only some software versions so far, so check with us before buying (signing permitting on the B9). In every case another tool writes the file. MD1 cars, including every B9 3.0 TDI, cannot be tuned with VAGPULSE. See the 2.0 TDI tuning guide.
Gearbox and quattro notes
- Multitronic. Front-wheel-drive automatic B6, B7 and B8 A4s use this CVT, rated 310 Nm (original 01J) or 400 Nm (later 0AW). A Stage 1 150 PS 1.8T makes 285 to 335 Nm and a Stage 1 B8 2.0 TFSI 420 to 430 Nm, so our advice is to leave a multitronic A4 at standard power (why).
- Quattro. Quattro cars never had the multitronic; B6 1.8T and B7 quattro automatics were five- and six-speed tiptronics. Quattro adds grip, not gearbox strength, so keep an automatic at a conservative Stage 1.
- Manual. Budget for a clutch once you go past Stage 1.
Before you tune: check the A4 itself
- Read the engine fault codes. On older K-line A4s VAGPULSE reads engine fault codes with their P-numbers, live data, and engine coding and adaptations. The B8 and later use CAN diagnostics, where it gives generic OBD-II: engine fault codes (see our free lookup), live data, clearing codes and the VIN.
- Check your generation's weak points: B7, B8 and B9 common problems, or the 1.8T 20v problems guide for a B5 or B6.
- Back up the original file before anything is written (how), and log a full-throttle pull after the tune.
Cost, warranty, insurance and the law
Cost. A shop Stage 1 remap usually costs $300 to $800. VAGPULSE is a one-time $249 with the OBD cable included, and on an ME7.5 1.8T it covers the whole job (cost guide).
Warranty. A VAG dealer check that finds a non-factory calibration sets a TD1 flag on the car's record, which stays after you write stock back. Most A4s are long out of warranty; a late B9 may not be.
Insurance and emissions. Tell your insurer about a remap; an undeclared one can invalidate your cover. Keep the catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, EGR and, on a TDI, the particulate filter and AdBlue system working. Removing or disabling them is illegal on public roads in the US, the UK and the EU, and VAGPULSE does not offer it.
Tune your B6 or B7 A4 1.8T at home
VAGPULSE reads your ME7.5 A4, saves a backup every time, builds a Stage 1 to 3 map for your exact engine and writes it over OBD. For other A4s it builds the file for another tool to write on most MED9, MED17 and EDC16 software versions and many EDC15 ones, only some EDC17 so far, and not yet on Continental Simos. One-time $249, cable included, no subscription.

FAQ: Audi A4 tuning
How much horsepower does a Stage 1 tune add to an Audi A4?
It depends on the engine: typically 190 to 205 PS from a 150 PS 1.8T, 250 to 275 PS from a 211 PS B8 or B8.5 2.0 TFSI, and about 300 to 315 hp from a 252 hp B9 2.0 TFSI. A 2.0 TDI typically gains 60 to 90 Nm.
Can I tune my Audi A4 myself?
Yes, completely, on a B6, B7 or later B5 1.8T with a Bosch ME7.5 engine computer: VAGPULSE reads, backs up, tunes and writes it over OBD. The earliest B5 1.8T (AEB) has a Motronic M3.8.2 that VAGPULSE does not write; newer A4s need a tool that supports their engine computer.
Can you tune an Audi A4 B8 or B8.5?
Yes. The 2.0 TFSI uses Bosch MED17.1 or, on some B8.5s, Continental Simos 18, and Stage 1 typically takes a 211 PS car to 250 to 275 PS. VAGPULSE can build the file for most MED17.1 software versions, but not yet for Simos 18, and does not write it. Front-wheel-drive automatics have a multitronic gearbox to respect.
Can you tune an Audi A4 B9?
Yes. APR, Unitronic and Integrated Engineering sell Stage 1 software for the B9 2.0 TFSI, typically taking a 252 hp car to about 300 to 315 hp. VAGPULSE builds files for most MED17.1.10 2.0 TFSI software versions but not yet for Simos 18, does not write them, and offers no tuning for the MD1 diesels.
