Audi S4 tuning by generation: B5 to B9 Stage 1

A twin-turbo V6, a V8 with no turbo, a supercharged V6 and a turbo V6 have all worn the S4 badge. What Stage 1 gains on each, what to check first, and which S4 you can tune yourself.

Every Audi S4 can be tuned, but the right approach depends on which of four very different engines yours has. Stage 1 is new software for the engine computer (the ECU, or engine control unit) on a car with standard hardware: more boost, with fuel and ignition timing to match.

In short: the B5 S4's 2.7 biturbo V6 runs a Bosch ME7.1 engine computer that you can read, tune and write yourself through the OBD port with VAGPULSE, and Stage 1 typically lifts it from 265 PS to 300 to 320 PS. The supercharged B8 and B8.5 and the turbo B9 are tuned with software from companies such as APR, Unitronic and 034Motorsport, whose published Stage 1 figures are roughly 390 to 440 hp (B8) and 400 to 450 hp (B9).

Which S4 do you have?

The engine code is on the data sticker in the boot (trunk) floor; the free ECU part-number decoder confirms the engine computer. In the VAGPULSE column and the RS4 list below, Home tune is the whole job over the OBD port (read, back up, build a Stage 1 to 3 map, write it); File means it builds a Stage 1 to 3 file with a corrected checksum from one you supply, for a different tool to write; Ask us means talk to us before buying; Not yet means VAGPULSE cannot build a tune for that engine computer (Continental Simos) yet; None means no tuning.

North American B5s carry engine code APB, rated 250 hp: the same 2.7T biturbo. From 2019, European S4s used a 347 PS 3.0 V6 TDI diesel instead; it is not in our audited catalogue, so ask us before buying anything for one.

Typical Stage 1 power, generation by generation

For a healthy, standard car. B8 and B9 ranges are what APR, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering and 034Motorsport publish for 91 to 93 octane (95 to 98 RON); E85 ethanol fuel makes more. PS is metric horsepower, about 1.4 percent below US hp; Nm (newton metres) measures torque.

Stage 2 adds hardware with software to match: on a B5, downpipes, intercoolers and diverter valves, typically 330 to 350 PS; on a B8, usually a smaller supercharger pulley, which spins the supercharger faster. Integrated Engineering says its B9 Stage 2 adds no power over Stage 1 and mainly suits aftermarket downpipes. More in Stage 1, 2 and 3 explained.

B5 S4: tune it in your driveway

VAGPULSE handles the B5's Bosch ME7.1 from start to finish through the OBD port, using its own cable:

Stick to maps VAGPULSE made itself, because one edited by hand is not yet fully checksum-corrected. Eurodyne Maestro (it lists the 2000 to 2002 S4) and the free NefMoto flasher also cover this ME7.1 ECU. On a car this old, check the hardware before the map: turbo oil lines, timing belt, both diverter valves and the breathers. The 2.7T tuning guide covers those, the RS4 turbo swap and the gearboxes.

B6 and B7 S4: the 4.2 V8

From 2003 the S4 used a 4.2 V8 without a turbo (BBK, 344 PS). Our catalogue lists a dual-bank Bosch ME7.1.1 engine computer, and VAGPULSE makes no promise to write it: ask us before buying, with the ECU part number to hand. Software alone typically adds 5 to 10 percent.

The real worry is the timing chain system at the back of the engine. Its guides, tensioners and cam adjusters wear, showing as a cold-start rattle, camshaft timing faults, misfires or limp mode, and the guides and tensioners need the engine out. Settle any of that (rattle on cold start) before paying for power.

B8 and B8.5 S4: the supercharged 3.0 TFSI

The 2009 to 2016 S4 runs a Continental Simos 8.4 or 8.5. VAGPULSE cannot build a tune for Simos yet, and it does not read or write this ECU over OBD. APR, Unitronic and 034Motorsport sell OBD-flashed Stage 1 software. Check these first, with details in the 3.0 TFSI problems guide:

The S4 is the high-performance A4, so the A4 B8 problems guide covers the rest. Gearboxes are a six-speed manual or the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch (DL501), rated 550 Nm; published Stage 1 torque of about 350 to 385 lb-ft (roughly 475 to 520 Nm) stays under that. Gearbox (TCU) software for quicker shifts is sold separately (S tronic guide).

B9 and B9.5 S4: the turbo 3.0 TFSI

The B9 swapped the supercharger for a single twin-scroll turbo (EA839, engine code CWGD, 354 hp). Its Bosch MG1CS002 engine computer is outside VAGPULSE's tuning, so we cannot build or write a tune for it.

APR, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering, 034Motorsport and the COBB Accessport (about $770, with COBB's ready-made maps) all flash Stage 1 through the OBD port, at home or at a dealer. The JB4 ($579) is a piggyback, a box between the sensors and the ECU that alters their signals (tuning box vs remap). The B9 S4 came with an eight-speed ZF tiptronic and no manual, and 034Motorsport bundles gearbox software with its tune. Give any tuner your model year and ECU software version before paying, and see the A4 B9 problems guide for the rest of the car.

And the RS4

Before you tune any S4

  1. Read the engine fault codes. On the B5's older K-line wiring, VAGPULSE reads engine fault codes with P-numbers, live data, and engine coding and adaptations; on the CAN-bus B8 and B9, generic OBD-II (engine fault codes, live data, clearing codes, the VIN). The free fault-code lookup explains any code.
  2. Save the original software before anything is written (how to back up your ECU).
  3. Use the fuel the map expects: 98 RON, or 93 octane in North America, unless it is a 91 octane tune.
  4. Log a full-throttle run afterwards (how to datalog your car).

Cost, warranty, insurance and the law

Cost. A shop Stage 1 remap usually runs $300 to $800. Branded B8 or B9 Stage 1 software lists at roughly $500 to $1,000, plus a dealer visit or a flashing cable. VAGPULSE is $249 once with the cable, no subscription: the whole job on a B5, though it cannot build a tune for a B8's Simos yet (Stage 1 cost guide).

Warranty. Audi dealers run a software check, and a calibration that did not come from the factory earns the car a TD1 flag that remains even after stock software is restored. In the US, under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the maker must prove an aftermarket part caused a failure before refusing a warranty repair.

Insurance and emissions. Declare the remap to your insurer, or your cover may be invalid. Leave the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors working: removing or disabling emissions equipment is illegal on public roads in the US, the UK and the EU, and VAGPULSE does not offer it. In California, tuning software used on the road generally needs a CARB Executive Order (EO) as well.

Tune your B5 S4 at home

VAGPULSE reads the ME7.1 in a B5 S4 or RS4, saves a backup every time, builds a Stage 1 to 3 map for the exact engine and writes it over OBD. It cannot build a tune for the Simos in a B8 or B8.5 yet. One-time $249, cable included, no subscription.

FAQ: Audi S4 tuning

How much horsepower does a Stage 1 tune add to an Audi S4?

A B5 2.7T typically goes from 265 PS to 300 to 320 PS. Tuners publish about 390 to 440 hp for a 333 hp B8 or B8.5 and about 400 to 450 hp for a 354 hp B9, on 91 to 93 octane. The B6 and B7 V8 typically gains 5 to 10 percent.

Can you tune a B9 Audi S4?

Yes. APR, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering, 034Motorsport and COBB sell Stage 1 software for the B9 and B9.5 S4 that loads through the OBD port, and the JB4 is a piggyback alternative. VAGPULSE cannot tune its Bosch MG1 engine computer.

Can I tune a B5 S4 myself?

Yes. Its Bosch ME7.1 can be read, backed up, tuned and written at home through the OBD port with VAGPULSE and its included cable, for $249 once. Check the turbos, timing belt, diverter valves and breathers first.

Should I get an APR tune for my S4?

APR is a popular choice, but Unitronic and 034Motorsport also cover the B8 and B9, and Integrated Engineering and COBB the B9. Compare supported fuels, home flashing, gearbox software and price.
