P0011 Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)

Do not keep driving

The camshaft is not lining up with the crankshaft where the ECU commanded. On these engines that is usually the variable-valve-timing adjuster, its solenoid, or oil that is too old or too low to move the adjuster.

Can you drive it? This class of fault can cause real mechanical damage if you keep driving on it. A persistent misfire also destroys the catalytic converter, which is the expensive part.

The definition

P0011: Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1).

P0011 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Check the oil level and when it was last changed. These adjusters run on oil pressure and are the first thing to suffer from old or low oil.
  2. Check the cam adjuster solenoid and its screen for sludge.
  3. Only then suspect the timing chain or belt and its tensioner.

What actually causes this on a VAG

Camshaft timing is out relative to the crankshaft. On the EA888 2.0 TSI this deserves immediate attention, because one of its causes is a tensioner failure that can destroy the engine outright.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Old, low or wrong-grade oil. The cam adjuster is hydraulic - it moves on oil pressure through small passages. Old or low oil is the single most common cause and the cheapest to rule out. Check level and service history first.
  2. The camshaft adjuster solenoid (N205) or its screen is blocked. The filter screen behind the solenoid clogs with sludge. Cleaning it sometimes clears the fault entirely.
  3. The timing chain tensioner has failed. On earlier EA888 engines the chain tensioner is a known weak point. If it lets go the chain jumps and the valves meet the pistons. A rattle for a second or two on cold start is the warning sign.

Worth knowing: If this engine rattles briefly on start-up, stop driving it and have the timing chain tensioner checked before anything else. That specific noise on this platform is the one that precedes catastrophic failure.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
