P001B–P002E A Camshaft Profile Actuator A Control Circuit Low Bank 1

Investigate soon

The voltage on this circuit is sitting near zero. Typically a short to earth, or a sensor that has failed to its low end.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P001B: A Camshaft Profile Actuator A Control Circuit Low Bank 1.

P001B is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Unplug the sensor. If the reading jumps to full scale, the wiring is fine and the sensor has failed low.
  2. Check the sensor's 5V supply and its earth before condemning the sensor itself.

What actually causes this on a VAG

On engines that switch between two camshaft lobe profiles, a small solenoid actuator drives a pin that slides the cam sleeve across. This code means the control circuit for actuator A on bank one is reading low - the control unit is seeing that wire sitting at or near earth when it did not put it there. In practice that usually means a wire touching metal somewhere, or a solenoid that has shorted internally. The engine typically stays locked on one cam profile, which can feel like a soft patch in the power delivery.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Chafed wiring shorting to the engine or a bracket. The engine loom is routed across a hot, vibrating surface, and once the insulation has worn through, the bare wire earths on whatever it is touching - which is precisely what a low-circuit code describes, so start here. Trace the wires from the actuator back through the loom, flexing the harness by hand and paying attention to any point where it passes a metal edge, a heat shield or a fixing clip. A fault that appears only once the engine is hot and moving is very often chafe.
  2. A dirty or wet connector giving a path to earth. These plugs sit on top of the cylinder head where oil mist collects and where water can find its way in. Contamination that gives the control wire a route to earth - through a damp plug body, the connector shell or a dirty terminal - will drag it low. Unplug it, look inside for oil, damp or green pins, clean and dry it thoroughly and refit it properly before ordering any parts. It costs nothing, and it is exactly the sort of thing that gets written off as a failed actuator.
  3. The actuator itself shorted internally. A failed winding can drag the circuit low on its own. Confirm it by unplugging the actuator and clearing the code: if the fault changes from a low reading to an open circuit fault, the wiring back to the control unit is healthy and the actuator is the suspect. If it still reports low with nothing plugged in, the short is in the harness and a new actuator would have been wasted money.

Worth knowing: Resist the urge to replace the actuator first. A low-side fault is more often something outside the part than inside it, and the unplug-and-see test costs nothing: if the code changes character with the actuator disconnected, the wiring is intact and you have narrowed the problem to one small component instead of guessing.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
