P0075–P0081 Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Bank 1

Investigate soon

The ECU has logged a fault on P0075. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P0075: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Bank 1.

P0075 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
  2. Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
  3. Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

This is the electrical circuit for the solenoid that controls intake-side valve operation on bank 1 - on VAG engines usually the oil control valve for the intake camshaft adjuster, normally mounted on the front or top of the cylinder head and often hidden under the plastic engine cover. Unlike the range/performance version of this fault, this code is about the circuit itself: the ECU is not seeing the electrical behaviour it expects when it switches the solenoid. You may notice a slightly rough idle, weaker mid-range pull and worse economy, because the camshaft stays parked in its default position.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Connector or wiring at the solenoid itself. These plugs sit in a hot, oily spot and the plastic goes brittle while the terminals loosen or corrode. A common VAG finding is a weeping cam cover seal that soaks the plug, with the oil then wicking up inside the wires. Unplug it, look for oil or green corrosion in the terminals, and try a gentle wiggle test with the engine running or while watching live data.
  2. Failed solenoid coil. The winding goes open or short with age and heat. If the engine carries a solenoid of the same part number on the exhaust side or the other bank, compare them or swap them over and see whether the code follows the part - that costs nothing and settles it.
  3. Chafed loom near the cylinder head. The engine loom runs along the cam cover and under or around the intake manifold, and after many heat cycles the outer sheath hardens and rubs through against brackets and edges. Check the loom where it is clipped down and where it passes anything sharp, particularly if the fault comes and goes with engine movement.
  4. ECU output stage. Rare, and only to be considered once the solenoid and the wiring between it and the ECU have both been checked and proven good.

Worth knowing: Check the connector before you buy the part. On many of these engines oil seeps from the cam cover seal and travels down the wires into the plug, producing what looks like an electrical failure - a cheap seal and a cleaned connector fix it. If you find oil in the plug, cut the affected section back, or the oil will keep creeping along the loom and can eventually reach the ECU connector.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Common questions

What does P0075 mean?

P0075 means Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Bank 1. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.

Can I drive with P0075?

The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
