P0076–P0082 Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Low Bank 1

Investigate soon

The voltage on this circuit is sitting near zero. Typically a short to earth, or a sensor that has failed to its low end.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P0076: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Low Bank 1.

P0076 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Unplug the sensor. If the reading jumps to full scale, the wiring is fine and the sensor has failed low.
  2. Check the sensor's 5V supply and its earth before condemning the sensor itself.

What actually causes this on a VAG

A "low" fault on the intake-side valve control solenoid circuit for bank 1 means the ECU is seeing that circuit pulled down towards earth when it should not be. On VAG engines this is usually the intake camshaft adjuster's oil control valve, on the front of the cylinder head. A short to earth in the wiring or a shorted solenoid winding are the two realistic possibilities, and modern ECUs will switch the output off to protect themselves, so the camshaft stops adjusting and the engine feels flat and drinks more fuel.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Wire shorted to earth in the loom. The solenoid's feed runs across the top of a hot engine and rubs against brackets, the cam cover edge and coolant pipes until the insulation wears through onto bare metal. Look for shiny or flattened patches on the loom sheath, especially where it is clipped down or passes something sharp, and check the section that moves with the engine on its mounts.
  2. Solenoid shorted internally. The coil breaks down with heat and age and effectively becomes a dead short. If the engine has an identical solenoid elsewhere, swap the two and see whether the code follows the part - that is the cheapest test available.
  3. Water, salt or oil bridging the connector. Contamination in the plug provides a path to earth that comes and goes with the weather. Unplug it and inspect for corrosion, oil pooling in the terminals, or a perished seal, and dry it out thoroughly before condemning anything.
  4. ECU driver fault. Uncommon, and worth considering only once solenoid and wiring have both been individually cleared.

Worth knowing: There is a simple free test that splits solenoid from wiring. Unplug the solenoid, clear the memory and run the engine briefly. If the stored fault changes to an open circuit or "high" code, the wiring back to the ECU is fine and the solenoid is the problem. If it still records "low" with nothing plugged in, the short is in the loom and a new solenoid would be wasted money.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
