P0102 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor. If the reading jumps to full scale, the wiring is fine and the sensor has failed low.
- Check the sensor's 5V supply and its earth before condemning the sensor itself.
What actually causes this on a VAG
The mass airflow sensor signal is lower than expected.
Most likely causes, in order
- The MAF sensing element is contaminated. Oil from an over-oiled aftermarket air filter is a frequent cause. The element can be cleaned with dedicated MAF cleaner - never touch it.
- An intake leak before the sensor, or a split intake boot. Air bypassing the sensor reads as low flow.
- Wiring or connector fault at the sensor. Check the connector for spread pins and the loom for chafe.
Worth knowing: A car that runs noticeably better with the MAF unplugged is telling you the sensor is lying - unplugged, the ECU falls back to a modelled value.
