P0103–P010D Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor A Circuit High
The voltage on this circuit is sitting near battery voltage. Typically a short to a positive feed, or a disconnected sensor floating high.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P0103: Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor A Circuit High.
P0103 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor and check whether the signal falls. If it stays high, suspect the wiring rather than the sensor.
- Check the earth path - a missing earth makes a sensor read high.
What actually causes this on a VAG
This one is electrical rather than a plausibility judgement - the signal coming back from the mass air flow sensor is higher than the ECU believes is physically possible, so it stops trusting it and runs on a substitute value. The car will usually still drive, but expect reduced power, rough running, poor economy and possibly a limp mode on turbo models. Because it's a circuit code, the fault can sit in the sensor, its plug or the wiring between it and the ECU.
Most likely causes, in order
- Connector or wiring fault at the sensor. The MAF plug lives in a hot, damp, vibrating part of the engine bay; spread pins, green corrosion, oil wicking into the connector or a chafed loom will all push the signal out of range. Unclip it and inspect the pins closely, then with live data on screen and the ignition on but the engine not running, check the airflow reading - it should be effectively nothing. A large airflow figure with the engine stopped proves the problem is electrical, not air.
- Failed MAF sensor. The hot-film element and its onboard electronics do simply die, often after years of dirt or a soaking from an over-oiled filter. Once the wiring and plug have been cleared, and especially if wiggling the loom changes nothing while the reading stays stuck high, the sensor itself is the remaining candidate.
- Bad earth or a short to a supply wire. If the sensor's earth is poor or its signal wire has rubbed through onto something carrying voltage, the ECU reads a permanently high signal no matter which sensor is fitted. This is worth suspecting particularly if a new sensor made no difference, or if the loom has recently been disturbed for other work.
- Wrong or non-genuine sensor fitted. MAF sensors are calibrated to a specific housing diameter and engine. A copy part, or a unit from a similar-looking but different engine, can read outside the expected range from the moment it's fitted. If the fault appeared right after a MAF change, check the part is the correct one for your exact engine code.
Worth knowing: This is a circuit code, so the plug and wiring come first - replacing the sensor before checking them is the classic expensive mistake here. Driving on the substitute value for a short journey is fine, but don't work the engine hard while the ECU is guessing at the airflow.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
