P0171–P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Investigate soon

The engine is running with too much air for the fuel it is getting. An unmetered air leak downstream of the airflow sensor is the usual cause.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P0171: System Too Lean (Bank 1).

P0171 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Find the air leak first. Check the intake boots, the PCV system, the dipstick seal and the oil filler cap before replacing any sensor.
  2. Smoke-test the intake if you can - it finds in minutes what guessing takes weeks to.
  3. Only then look at fuel delivery and the airflow sensor.

What actually causes this on a VAG

The engine is running lean. On VAG four-cylinder turbo engines there is one cause so common it is worth checking before anything else.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. The PCV / crankcase breather valve diaphragm has split. This is the classic cause on 2.0 TSI/TFSI and 1.8T engines. The diaphragm tears and lets unmetered air straight into the intake. A common field test is to open the oil filler cap with the engine idling - a healthy system pulls a noticeable vacuum.
  2. An intake boot, hose or manifold gasket is leaking. Anything downstream of the airflow sensor that lets in air the ECU did not measure will produce this. Cold-start-only symptoms point here.
  3. The mass airflow sensor is under-reading. A dirty or aged MAF reports less air than is really entering, so the ECU under-fuels. Compare its reading against expected values at idle and at load before replacing it.

Worth knowing: Fuel trim values tell you where to look: a lean condition that is much worse at idle than at load is a vacuum leak, while one that stays constant across the range points at fuel delivery or the airflow sensor.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.
