P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
The sensor still works, but its reading has drifted outside the window the ECU expects. That usually means a tired sensor or a problem with what it is measuring, not a broken wire.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
The definition
P0341: Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance.
P0341 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Check the oil level and when it was last changed. These adjusters run on oil pressure and are the first thing to suffer from old or low oil.
- Check the cam adjuster solenoid and its screen for sludge.
- Only then suspect the timing chain or belt and its tensioner.
What actually causes this on a VAG
This is the awkward cousin of P0340. The signal from the camshaft sensor is arriving, but it doesn't line up with what the crankshaft is doing, so the ECU flags it as implausible. That very often means the camshaft genuinely is in the wrong place rather than that the sensor is lying - a stretched timing chain, a worn tensioner, a belt fitted a tooth out, or a variable valve timing adjuster that can't hold its position. Expect rough running, a hesitant or lumpy idle, poor starting and sometimes reduced power, though on a mild case there may be nothing obvious beyond the warning light.
Most likely causes, in order
- The engine's timing has moved. Chain stretch and tired chain tensioners are the usual mechanical cause on chain-driven engines; on belt-driven ones, a belt fitted or slipped a tooth out does the same thing. Look for other codes about camshaft/crankshaft correlation, and treat a short rattle on start-up as a serious warning. If the code appeared soon after a belt or chain job, suspect the job.
- Variable valve timing adjuster or its solenoid. The cam adjuster is driven by oil pressure through a solenoid valve (often listed as N205 or similar). Dirty oil, a low level, overdue services or a sticking solenoid can leave the cam sitting where the ECU didn't ask for it. Check the oil level and condition first - that costs nothing - then have the solenoid actuated and its filter screen checked.
- A loose or damaged sensor wheel, or an intermittent sensor. If the ring the sensor reads is damaged, or the sensor is loose in its bore, the signal wanders. Worth a look while you're at the sensor, but don't assume it before checking the timing.
- Oil or corrosion in the sensor plug. The same oil-in-the-connector problem that causes P0340 can also make the signal ragged enough to look implausible. Quick and free to inspect, so do it early even though it's not the most likely answer here.
Worth knowing: Do not just fit a camshaft sensor for this code. P0341 more often means the camshaft is genuinely out than that the sensor is faulty, and on chain-driven engines a failing tensioner that gets ignored can end in a jumped chain and bent valves - an engine-out bill instead of a sensor. If you hear a rattle on start-up, stop driving it and have the timing checked.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
