The definition

P0401: EGR A Flow Insufficient Detected.

P0401 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

Insufficient EGR flow, and on TDI diesels this is a soot problem far more often than an electrical one.

Most likely causes, in order

The EGR valve or cooler is clogged with soot. Recirculated exhaust deposits carbon until the passage is effectively blocked. Short-journey cars suffer worst.
The EGR valve is seized. It reports a position it cannot actually reach.
The intake manifold is coked up. On higher-mileage TDIs the manifold runners silt up with an oily carbon sludge that restricts flow independently of the valve.

Worth knowing: Cleaning is often a genuine fix here rather than a delaying tactic, but if the intake manifold is also coked, cleaning the valve alone will not hold.
