P0411 AIR System A Incorrect Flow Detected

Investigate soon

The ECU has logged a fault on P0411. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

The definition

P0411: AIR System A Incorrect Flow Detected.

P0411 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
  2. Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
  3. Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

This is the secondary air system reporting that the wrong amount of air is actually reaching the exhaust. During a cold start the ECU runs the pump and watches the oxygen sensor for the mixture going lean - too little change means the air isn't getting through, and air showing up when it shouldn't means something is leaking or stuck open. It's the most common of the VAG secondary air codes and the car normally drives perfectly well with it. The test only runs on a genuine cold start with temperatures inside a set window, which is why the light can come and go and often won't reappear until the next properly cold morning.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Blocked combi valve or carboned passages. The one-way valve at the head and the drillings that carry the air into the exhaust fill with carbon, so nothing reaches the exhaust even though the pump is working. The giveaway is hearing the pump run for its few seconds on a cold start with no change at all in the oxygen sensor readings. Taking the pipework off at the head shows how sooted the passages are.
  2. Vacuum not reaching the combi valve. Pump fine, valve fine, but the changeover solenoid or its little vacuum hoses aren't opening the combi valve, so it stays shut. Check the hoses for splits and perished ends and confirm the solenoid clicks when it's commanded. This is the cheapest thing to rule out.
  3. Combi valve leaking or stuck part open. The opposite problem - air, or exhaust gas, passing when it shouldn't. It can give a lumpy cold idle and lean readings outside the cold-start window, and it's the failure mode that goes on to ruin the pump.
  4. Weak pump or split delivery hose. The pump runs but doesn't move much air - a tired motor, a partly seized impeller, or a perished rubber delivery hose losing it before it gets there. Check the hose first, since it's a fraction of the cost, then feel for a decent blast of air at the pump outlet while it's commanded on.

Worth knowing: Before spending anything, have someone start the car stone cold while you stand and listen. Pump runs but nothing else changes, and the fault is downstream - the valve, the vacuum supply or blocked passages. No pump noise at all, and it's the pump, its relay or its feed. That thirty-second check splits the system cleanly in half and costs nothing.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.

Common questions

What does P0411 mean?

P0411 means AIR System A Incorrect Flow Detected. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.

Can I drive with P0411?

The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
