P0414–P0417 AIR System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted
The ECU has logged a fault on P0414. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P0414: AIR System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted.
P0414 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
Again the changeover valve for the secondary air system, but this time the ECU has seen a short - either the solenoid's winding has gone down internally, or its wire is touching earth or a live somewhere in the loom. Unlike the flow codes, this is an electrical check on the ECU's own output rather than a test of whether air reached the exhaust, so it can set as soon as the ECU drives that circuit instead of waiting for the whole system to be exercised. It's worth repairing properly rather than repeatedly clearing, because a dead short sits on the ECU's output driver.
Most likely causes, in order
- Chafed wiring shorting to earth. The loom rubs through against a bracket, a clip or a heat shield and the bare conductor touches metal. Follow the loom back from the valve and look for a worn or shiny spot, particularly where it's tied down to something solid or crosses an edge.
- Heat-damaged insulation. Where a clip has broken and let the loom drop onto the exhaust, turbo or another hot pipe, the insulation melts and the wire shorts. It's usually visible once you get eyes on the run of cable, and it needs a proper repair - soldered or crimped and re-sleeved, then re-secured away from the heat - rather than tape.
- Shorted solenoid coil. The winding fails internally and draws far more current than it should. A useful way to separate this from a loom fault: unplug the valve, clear the code and let the system run again. If it comes back as an open circuit with the plug off, the short was inside the valve; if it still reports a short, it's in the loom. Allow for the ECU needing another cold start before it re-tests, and note that not every ECU version distinguishes the two cleanly.
Worth knowing: Don't just keep clearing this one and carrying on. ECU output drivers are normally protected and will shut the circuit down rather than destroy themselves, but a hard short left live isn't a risk worth running when the repair is usually a length of wire and a bit of loom work - fix the wiring properly instead of taping over it.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Common questions
What does P0414 mean?
P0414 means AIR System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.
Can I drive with P0414?
The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
