P0420–P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Investigate soon

The part still works but no longer well enough to meet its target - worn out rather than broken.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).

P0420 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Confirm the sensors either side are both healthy before condemning the expensive part - a lazy rear sensor mimics this fault.
  2. Check for exhaust leaks upstream, which let extra air in and skew the reading.

What actually causes this on a VAG

The catalytic converter is not working as efficiently as the ECU expects. Worth testing carefully, because the part this names is expensive.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. An exhaust leak upstream of or between the oxygen sensors. Extra air entering through a leaking manifold, flexi or gasket skews the readings and mimics a dead catalyst. Check this first - it is common and far cheaper.
  2. A lazy rear oxygen sensor. An aged sensor responds too slowly and the ECU reads that as poor catalyst performance. Compare front and rear sensor traces.
  3. An untreated misfire or a running fault has damaged the catalyst. Raw fuel destroys catalysts. If misfire or fuel-trim codes are also stored, fix those first or the replacement will fail the same way.
  4. The catalyst is genuinely worn out. Real, but it should be the conclusion after the cheap checks, not the starting assumption.

Worth knowing: Never replace a catalytic converter while a misfire or a lean/rich fault is still stored. Fix the cause first, or the new one will go the same way.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.
