P0424 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first

- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
In the generic OBD standard this code belongs to an electrically heated catalytic converter - a cat with a heating element that brings it up to working temperature quickly after a cold start. Before you spend anything it is worth knowing that VAG's own fault-code set does not contain P0424 at all. VW group does define the codes covering a catalyst heater's control circuit and its supply, but not this one, so it is not a fault an Audi, VW, Skoda or SEAT engine ECU sets. The overwhelming majority of these cars have no electric cat heater in the first place: they warm the catalyst with a software strategy instead, retarding the ignition and holding a raised idle for the first minute or two after a cold start.
Most likely causes, in order
- A code your car's own fault-code set does not contain. If a reader has shown you this code on a VAG, the first job is to read the car again with a tool that shows VW group's own fault text, tells you which control module the fault came from, and gives you the freeze-frame data recorded when it was stored. Very often the fault the car has actually stored turns out to be a different one entirely.
- The code VAG actually uses for a catalyst not reaching temperature. VAG does define a warm-up catalyst efficiency code for bank 1, and that is the entry that genuinely covers this complaint on these cars. If that code, or a lambda or misfire code, is sitting in the same list, that is what to work on.
- Things that genuinely stop a catalyst getting hot. An exhaust leak upstream of the cat, ageing lambda sensors, a misfire putting unburnt fuel through it, or a car only ever used for short cold journeys will all leave the catalyst cooler than the ECU expects. Read the whole car and look at what else is stored alongside, rather than treating one code in isolation.
Worth knowing: Do not buy a catalytic converter on the strength of this code. On a VAG there is no such entry in the manufacturer's own fault-code set to act on, and on any car that does have an electrically heated catalyst the problem is far more likely to be in the heater circuit than in the catalyst itself.
