P0477–P04A1 Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Low
The ECU has logged a fault on P0477. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P0477: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Low.
P0477 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
An electrical fault on the circuit for the exhaust pressure control valve: the control unit is seeing that control wire pulled lower than it should ever be, which points to a short to earth in the wiring or a failure inside the solenoid or actuator. It says nothing about the exhaust pressure itself. The control unit will usually stop driving the output as a protective measure, so the valve stays in its rest position. Because the generic name covers several different components, have the fault read with VAG-specific software so that you know which part of your engine is being complained about before anything is unbolted.
Most likely causes, in order
- Chafed wire shorting to earth. The most common cause on this kind of circuit. Follow the harness from the valve and check every point where it crosses a bracket, heat shield, mount or sharp edge; vibration wears the insulation through until the copper touches metal.
- Water or corrosion in the connector. Damp bridging the pins does the same job as a short. Unclip the plug and look for moisture, green corrosion or a perished seal, and check that the wiring enters the connector cleanly rather than being pulled tight.
- Short inside the solenoid or actuator. A useful test: unplug the valve and clear the code. If the fault now changes to the open-circuit version instead, the wiring back to the control unit is intact and the valve itself is the suspect. If the low-circuit fault stubbornly returns with the valve disconnected, the short is in the harness.
Worth knowing: Do that unplug test before ordering anything. It takes a couple of minutes and it cleanly separates a chafed wire from a failed valve - which is the difference between a short wiring repair and a part that may not have needed replacing.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
