P0506 Idle Control System RPM - Lower Than Expected

Investigate soon

The ECU has logged a fault on P0506. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

The definition

P0506: Idle Control System RPM - Lower Than Expected.

P0506 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
  2. Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
  3. Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

Idle is sitting lower than the ECU is asking for, or dipping when it should be steady - you may feel a shudder at a standstill or the engine nearly stalling as you come to a halt. Because idle is managed through the electronic throttle on most of these engines, the usual story is that the air the ECU asked for isn't arriving, or something is loading the engine down at idle. It's a symptom code rather than a failed-part code, so it points at a condition to find rather than a component to swap.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Carbon in the throttle body or intake. Deposits around the throttle plate choke off the small airflow that idle depends on, so the commanded opening no longer produces the right idle speed. Clean it and then re-run the throttle adaptation before judging whether anything has changed.
  2. EGR valve sticking open or heavily coked. Where an external EGR valve is fitted, exhaust gas leaking in at idle displaces fresh air and drags idle down, usually with a rough, uneven note. It's a familiar one on diesels; petrol engines vary a lot, and plenty of newer ones don't have an external EGR valve to blame at all, so check what your engine actually has before going down this road.
  3. Something loading the engine at idle. A dragging air-con compressor, an unusually heavy electrical demand, or - on cars with hydraulic power steering - the pump loaded up on full lock can all pull idle down. The ECU normally raises idle to compensate, so this tends to show up when it can't keep up. If the dip only happens with the air-con on, with a big electrical load switched on, or on full lock, look there rather than at the throttle. Note that many newer VAG models use electric power steering, which doesn't load the engine the same way.
  4. Weak fuelling or ignition. Tired coils, plugs long overdue, dirty injectors or poor fuel supply show up first at idle, where there's least margin. Check for misfire codes and note whether it's worse cold or when fully warm.

Worth knowing: Write down exactly when the idle drops - cold only, air-con on, in gear at a standstill, on full lock - before anyone starts removing parts. That one observation usually separates a throttle or intake problem from a load or fuelling problem.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.

Common questions

What does P0506 mean?

P0506 means Idle Control System RPM - Lower Than Expected. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.

Can I drive with P0506?

The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
