P071A–P071D Transmission Mode Switch A Circuit

Investigate soon

The ECU has logged a fault on P071A. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P071A: Transmission Mode Switch A Circuit.

P071A is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
  2. Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
  3. Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

Official definition: Transmission Mode Switch "A" Circuit. This is the input that tells the gearbox control unit which driving programme you have selected, and the gearbox has decided that input is not making sense. Which physical switch that is depends on your model: it may be a sport or programme selection at the gear lever, a separate driving-mode button on the console or dash, or mode contacts inside the selector assembly. Establish which one your car actually has before anyone starts removing trim - a wiring diagram or the gearbox module's live data will tell you. Do not assume it is the manual/Tiptronic gate: on VAG the Tiptronic switch is a separate component with its own separate fault codes. Typically the car falls back to a fixed automatic programme: it still drives normally, but the mode you select is ignored and the display may not show it. The gearbox itself is usually perfectly healthy.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Connector at the selector assembly not fully home. The free one, and worth ruling out first - especially if anyone has recently been under the console for a stereo, a handbrake, an alarm or the seats. A plug that is half-seated or has a corroded pin gives exactly this complaint. Check it is pushed fully home and its clip has latched.
  2. Worn or contaminated switch contacts. The contacts inside the selector or mode switch wear, particularly where the function is used regularly. A scan tool can display the switch states live while the control is operated - a state that does not change, or that flickers, identifies the fault straight away and costs nothing but a few minutes.
  3. Liquid or debris in the gear lever assembly. A drink spilled into the lever surround, or years of grit, can foul the contacts. It is a real cause though not necessarily the most common one, and it is worth mentioning to whoever is diagnosing the car because it points at cleaning rather than replacement. Look for staining around the base of the lever or a sticky feel to the gate.
  4. Wiring or connector damage under the centre console. The harness to the selector flexes with the lever and runs under carpet where it can be pinched by seat rails or damaged by previous work. Check where the loom bends and where anything has been fitted or removed.
  5. Gearbox control unit input fault. Rare and expensive, and only worth considering once the connector, the switch and the wiring have all been checked and cleared.

Worth knowing: Ask for the switch states to be watched live while the control is operated before anyone removes the centre console - most of the cost of this repair is the labour to get in there, and the live check often shows in a minute whether the switch, the wiring or nothing at all is at fault. If a drink was spilled recently, mention it: it changes the diagnosis completely. One caution if you go in yourself: on many VAG models the console area carries airbag and seatbelt-pretensioner wiring - anything with a yellow connector - so disconnect the battery and observe the manufacturer's waiting time before disturbing it, or leave that part to a workshop.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Common questions

What does P071A mean?

P071A means Transmission Mode Switch A Circuit. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.

Can I drive with P071A?

The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
