P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance/Stuck Off

Investigate soon

The part is not moving as commanded - physically stuck rather than electrically dead.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

The definition

P0741: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance/Stuck Off.

P0741 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Check the part can move by hand with the engine off, where it is safe to do so.
  2. Look for carbon or soot build-up, which is the usual reason a flap or valve stops moving on these engines.

What actually causes this on a VAG

This is about the lock-up clutch inside the torque converter - the one that bolts the engine straight to the gearbox at steady speed so you're not endlessly churning fluid. The controller commands it on, measures how much the engine is still slipping against the gearbox, and sets this code when the slip doesn't come down the way it should. Typical symptoms are revs sitting higher than usual at a steady motorway cruise, worse fuel economy, or a light judder at low throttle around town. It only applies to conventional torque converter automatics - a DSG has no torque converter, so this code shouldn't turn up on one.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Tired gearbox oil. Worn fluid is one of the most common reasons the lock-up clutch starts to slip or shudder, because the clutch relies on the fluid's friction properties to grip. Check service history and the condition of the fluid before anything else - it's the cheapest thing on this list by a long way.
  2. Lock-up solenoid or valve body wear. A sticking solenoid, or a worn bore in the valve body, means the clutch never gets the apply pressure it needs. On a road test with live data you can see whether lock-up is being commanded at all and how much slip is left when it is - that tells you whether the box is trying and failing, or not trying.
  3. Worn lock-up clutch in the converter. The friction lining wears out and its debris then circulates in the fluid, which makes everything else worse. The classic pattern is that a fluid and filter service improves it for a while and then the judder or the code comes back.
  4. Wiring or the gearbox connector. Less likely for this particular code - it's usually about performance rather than an open circuit, and a plainly dead solenoid circuit tends to set its own electrical code - but the gearbox plug is quick and free to inspect for oil, corrosion or damaged pins while you're looking at everything else.

Worth knowing: Fix any other stored faults first. The controller won't lock the converter up when it isn't happy about something else - an engine fault, a duff temperature signal, a gearbox running hot - and sorting those out sometimes makes this code disappear on its own. And if a torque converter is ever replaced, the fluid and the cooler must be done at the same time, or old friction debris will destroy the new one.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
