P0754–P0774 Shift Solenoid A Intermittent
The fault comes and goes, which points at a connection that only breaks under vibration, heat or load.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P0754: Shift Solenoid A Intermittent.
P0754 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
This is the same shift solenoid A as P0750, but logged with the qualifier 'intermittent'. It means the gearbox control unit saw the fault appear and then go away again, rather than finding it present and keeping it. In practice you may get an occasional harsh shift, a brief limp mode that clears when you restart, or no symptom at all beyond the stored code. Because the fault is not present when you go looking, this page is mostly about method rather than parts. The underlying causes are the same list as P0750 - connector and loom at the gearbox, fluid, supply voltage, and finally the valve body - but the order you attack them in changes, because an intermittent fault gives you evidence that a permanent one does not, and clearing the memory throws that evidence away. As with P0750, 'A' is generic OBD-II naming; a VAG-aware tool will name the actual solenoid valve number, which is what identifies the part.
Most likely causes, in order
- A connection that breaks under heat or vibration. The plug where the wiring enters the gearbox, and the loom running to it, sit in a hot area that shakes constantly. A pin that has spread slightly, or a wire cracked inside insulation that looks perfect from outside, will make contact when cold and let go when hot. Wiggle-testing the connector while watching live data, or gently warming the area, is how a workshop confirms this - and it is the check most likely to turn an intermittent code into a visible one.
- Fluid creeping into the wiring or connector. Gearbox oil can wick along the inside of the wires from within the box and sit in the plug, giving intermittent leakage between pins that comes and goes with temperature. Unplugging the connector and looking for oil, corrosion or a swollen seal is a five-minute check that regularly finds the answer, and it costs nothing but the time.
- Battery or charging voltage dipping. A momentary voltage drop from a failing battery, a corroded earth or a poor main connection can trip circuit monitoring across several modules at once. This is free to test and should be done early. If other unrelated codes were stored at the same moment - especially in modules that have nothing to do with the gearbox - suspect the supply before the gearbox.
- Old or contaminated fluid making a valve stick occasionally. A valve that sticks now and then makes the circuit behave oddly for a moment and then recover, which is exactly what an intermittent code looks like. If the fluid has never been changed, or smells burnt, a proper service with the correct specification fluid and filter is the sensible first repair rather than a gamble on parts - but it is a paid job, so do the two free checks above first.
Worth knowing: Before anything is cleared, get the freeze-frame data written down. What the module stores varies, but road speed, gearbox oil temperature and engine load at the moment the fault set are the useful ones. An intermittent fault that only appears from stone cold, and one that only appears when the box is fully hot, point at completely different repairs - and once you clear the memory that clue is gone for good. If a garage's first move is to clear the code and hand it back, they have just destroyed the best evidence you had.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
