P0792–P2750 Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
The sensor still works, but its reading has drifted outside the window the ECU expects. That usually means a tired sensor or a problem with what it is measuring, not a broken wire.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P0792: Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance.
P0792 is a powertrain code (the engine or gearbox), defined by the SAE standard - it means the same thing on any make of car, and any generic OBD-II reader will decode it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
Your gearbox has speed sensors watching shafts turning inside it, so the control unit can check that the ratio it selected is the ratio it is actually getting. This code names one of them specifically - the intermediate shaft speed sensor. 'Range/performance' means its signal is there but does not agree with the others: engine speed, the other shaft speeds, the wheel speeds. On many VAG boxes this sensor is internal, mounted on or beside the mechatronic, and a VAG-capable tool will give it the manufacturer's own name rather than the generic one. It can show up as harsh or confused changes and limp home, or with no symptom you can feel at all.
Most likely causes, in order
- Connector or wiring at the gearbox. The cheapest thing to rule out. Oil creeping into the plug, corroded pins or a chafed loom distorts the signal. Unplug, inspect, refit and see whether the fault returns.
- Old oil and metal debris on the sensor tip. These sensors read a toothed wheel magnetically, and clutch or bearing debris clinging to the tip corrupts what they see. It usually shows up alongside a filthy filter at service time, so ask what came out with the oil.
- The gearbox is genuinely slipping and the sensor is telling the truth. If a clutch or the torque converter slips, the shaft speeds really do not match the selected ratio, and the control unit flags the sensor that reported it. If the revs flare on load or rise without the car accelerating, suspect this. Confirmed by comparing engine speed with shaft speed under load in live data.
- The sensor itself has failed. Possible, but on most VAG boxes it is internal and reached through the same job as the valve body, so it is worth eliminating everything above first.
Worth knowing: This is the classic code where the sensor is not the fault. Before paying for gearbox internals, insist that someone checks the actual ratios against engine speed in live data - that single test separates 'the sensor is lying' from 'the gearbox is slipping', and the two repairs are worlds apart in cost.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
