The same park position sensor circuit again, but this time the signal is jumping about or dropping out momentarily rather than being wrong all the time. Erratic and intermittent almost always means a connection, a harness that moves, or a voltage problem - not a component that has died. You may see a one-off warning that clears at the next restart, or nothing at all beyond the stored code. That silence is the trap with this one: an intermittent park position fault means there are moments when the car cannot confirm the parking pawl has engaged, and nothing on the dashboard will tell you which moments those were.
Most likely causes, in order
- Connector or pin problem. Spread or corroded pins, a plug that is not fully latched, or oil wicking up the loom from the gearbox. Inspect it and try to reproduce the drop-out with a wiggle test while someone watches the live value.
- Harness chafing where it flexes. Look where the loom moves or crosses metal - around the gearbox, across the tunnel, behind the centre console. Rubbed or shiny insulation is the giveaway.
- Momentary voltage dips. A tired battery, a poor earth, or a stop-start restart can drop the supply just long enough to upset the reading. Check whether other modules logged faults at the same time, and have the battery tested.
- A sensor beginning to fail. Sensors often go erratic before they go permanently wrong. Reasonable to consider once wiring, connectors and voltage are proven, and after the fault has repeated.
Worth knowing: Until this is fixed, do not rely on P to hold the car: always set the electric parking brake or handbrake, and chock a wheel on a slope. An intermittent fault is not a milder fault - it is the same fault with worse warning. Beyond that, record the freeze frame before clearing the code. Intermittent electrical faults are diagnosed from when and how they happen, not from the wording of the code, and clearing it deletes the only evidence you have. If the car has recently had work anywhere near the gearbox or centre console, start with what was disturbed.
