P2006–P2007 Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed Bank 1

Investigate soon

The part is not moving as commanded - physically stuck rather than electrically dead.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P2006: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed Bank 1.

P2006 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Check the part can move by hand with the engine off, where it is safe to do so.
  2. Look for carbon or soot build-up, which is the usual reason a flap or valve stops moving on these engines.

What actually causes this on a VAG

Same hardware as P2004, opposite complaint: the ECU has asked for the intake manifold flaps to open and the feedback says they're still shut. Because closed flaps restrict how much air can get in, this is one you tend to feel - the engine breathes badly higher up the rev range, goes flat when you ask for a big throttle opening, and may drop into reduced power. On a four-cylinder, Bank 1 just means the whole engine.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Flaps seized shut with carbon. Soot and oil mist bake onto the flap shaft and the port walls until nothing will turn, which is far and away the most common cause on a diesel. Unclip the actuator and try to move the shaft by hand - seized is seized, and you'll know immediately.
  2. Vacuum or actuator stuck applied. On vacuum-operated setups a solenoid stuck feeding vacuum, or an actuator that won't return, holds the flaps closed regardless of what the ECU wants. A hand vacuum pump on the actuator, applying and releasing while watching the arm, sorts this out quickly.
  3. Broken linkage or flap shaft. If the lever has snapped or the shaft has parted, the flaps simply stay wherever they were left. Watch the actuator arm during an output test: full free movement at the motor with no corresponding movement at the flaps means the connection between them has failed.
  4. Actuator module or position sensor fault. The flaps may actually be moving while the feedback built into the motor unit reports rubbish. Comparing commanded and actual position in live data during the output test is what separates this from a genuinely stuck flap.

Worth knowing: Don't leave this one running for months. Once the flaps are coked solid the plastic linkage is being asked to force a seized shaft, and a broken flap or lever ending up in a cylinder is a documented - though not everyday - way for a manifold job to turn into an engine job on VAG diesels. Getting the manifold off and inspected is the cheap end of that decision.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.
