P2010–P2013 Intake Manifold Runner Control Circuit High Bank 1

Investigate soon

The voltage on this circuit is sitting near battery voltage. Typically a short to a positive feed, or a disconnected sensor floating high.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P2010: Intake Manifold Runner Control Circuit High Bank 1.

P2010 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the signal falls. If it stays high, suspect the wiring rather than the sensor.
  2. Check the earth path - a missing earth makes a sensor read high.

What actually causes this on a VAG

This is the same inlet manifold flap circuit as P2009, but from the opposite direction. "Circuit high" means the ECU is seeing a higher voltage than it expects. Most often that is an open circuit - a break in the path, so the ECU is talking and nothing is answering - though a wire shorted across to a live feed will read the same way. Either way it is an electrical fault report, not a statement that the flap is stuck. The car will often drive normally, though a diesel may shudder noticeably as you switch it off, because the flap that should snap shut on shutdown is no longer being driven.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Plug not connected or not fully seated. Overwhelmingly the first thing to check, especially if the fault appeared straight after servicing or any work near the manifold, EGR, turbo or injectors. Make sure the connector is pushed fully home until it clicks and that the locking clip is engaged - one that is half-on will hold under the bonnet and drop out on the first rough road.
  2. Broken wire or open circuit in the actuator loom. Heat-hardened insulation cracks, a wire chafes through on a bracket, or a pin corrodes and loses contact. Continuity checks between the actuator plug and the ECU will find it; failing that, wiggle the loom section by section with the ignition on and watch for the fault to reappear. While you are in there, look for the opposite problem too - a rubbed-through wire touching a permanently live one will drive the reading high just as convincingly as a break will.
  3. Failed actuator with an internal open circuit. The motor winding fails open, so the ECU sees no load at all. Confirm that the ECU side behaves correctly at the plug before buying anything, because from the ECU's point of view a dead actuator and a disconnected one look identical - and on several VAG engines the actuator is only supplied as part of a complete inlet manifold.

Worth knowing: Circuit-high very often simply means "nothing is connected". Check that the plug at the flap actuator is on properly before you do anything else - and if this code appeared right after garage work in that area, that is almost certainly what it is.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.
