P2017–P2022 Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High Bank 1
The voltage on this circuit is sitting near battery voltage. Typically a short to a positive feed, or a disconnected sensor floating high.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P2017: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High Bank 1.
P2017 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor and check whether the signal falls. If it stays high, suspect the wiring rather than the sensor.
- Check the earth path - a missing earth makes a sensor read high.
What actually causes this on a VAG
The mirror image of P2016. The feedback signal from the intake manifold flap position sensor has gone above anything the ECU considers plausible, which typically points at an open circuit - a broken wire, an unplugged connector, a lost earth - or at the signal wire touching a supply. As with P2016, on most VAG engines the position sensor is built into the flap actuator motor on the manifold and the two are only sold together, and the flaps themselves may be moving perfectly well. The engine light will be on and the car may run in a safe default with the flaps left in one position.
Most likely causes, in order
- Disconnected or damaged plug at the flap motor. An unclipped connector, a broken locking tab or a pin pushed back in the housing will do exactly this, and it very often follows recent work in the area. Unplug it, inspect the terminals, reseat it properly until the clip clicks, then clear the code and see if it comes straight back.
- Broken wire or lost earth in the loom. An open circuit anywhere in the sensor's wiring typically drives the reading to the top of its range. Back-probe at the plug and wiggle the loom, particularly where it's routed over or behind the manifold and near anything hot or sharp.
- The actuator and sensor unit itself. With the wiring and supply proven good at the connector, the fault is inside the module, which on these engines normally means replacing the flap motor assembly - and on some manifolds that part only comes with the manifold. Only conclude this once someone has actually tested at the plug rather than assumed.
Worth knowing: If this code appeared straight after any work near the intake - turbo, injectors, manifold off, even a service - check the connector and the loom first, because a plug left unclipped or a loom trapped during reassembly is the single most common cause. Reseating it and clearing the code costs nothing and settles the question in one drive. If what you actually have stored is P2015 rather than this code, that's the implausible-signal fault instead, and on VAG it usually points at the broken plastic lever on the flap actuator.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
