P201A–P202E Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2 Unit 1
The sensor still works, but its reading has drifted outside the window the ECU expects. That usually means a tired sensor or a problem with what it is measuring, not a broken wire.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P201A: Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2 Unit 1.
P201A is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
- Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
- Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.
What actually causes this on a VAG
Read as written, this points at the AdBlue dosing valve - the injector that sprays reductant into the exhaust so the SCR catalyst can clean up NOx - and says its circuit is not behaving as the ECU expects. Two things are worth knowing before any money is spent. VAG's own fault list does not carry P201A. The code it does carry for this exact complaint is P202E, "Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Bank 1 Unit 1 Range/Performance". And "bank 2" only means anything on a system with a second dosing valve: VAG passenger cars have one, on bank 1 unit 1, which is why every VAG dosing valve code is worded that way. So a P201A from a basic reader is almost always a generic definition standing in for the code your car really stored.
Most likely causes, in order
- The code may not be what your car actually stored. Have it read again with a tool that speaks VAG's own diagnostics rather than generic OBD, so you get the manufacturer's fault text and the data captured when it set. Chasing a generic definition around an AdBlue system is an expensive way to be wrong, because almost every part of it is dear and awkward to reach.
- Wiring, connector and the valve's own circuit. Read the wording: this is a circuit fault, so start with the electrical side. The dosing valve lives in a hot, wet, salty place under the car, and corroded pins, a broken locking tab or a lead chafed against a bracket or heat shield produce exactly this kind of complaint. Check the plug is fully home, look inside for green corrosion and pushed-back pins, and flex the loom near it while the reading is watched. Cheapest to rule out, and it fails more often than the valve does.
- Crystallised AdBlue at the dosing valve. AdBlue dries to a hard white deposit, and a partly blocked injector tip delivers less than the ECU asked for. White crusting where the valve enters the exhaust is often visible from underneath. Worth knowing: on VAG this normally sets its own separate fault rather than a circuit code - the fault list carries P208E for the injection valve stuck closed and P218F for no flow detected - so if the car really stored a circuit fault, a blocked tip may not be the whole story. Deposits are water-soluble and soften with warm water; they should never be scraped off or attacked with solvent.
- Wrong or contaminated fluid in the tank. Anything other than proper AdBlue to the ISO 22241 standard upsets dosing and can damage the pump and the catalyst, including a well-meant top-up with water or a splash of diesel put into the wrong filler. It costs nothing to declare, so if there is any doubt at all about what went in, say so before anyone starts replacing parts.
- The supply side - pump, line or pressure. A supply pump or line that cannot build pressure leaves the ECU commanding a dose that never arrives. VAG's own fault list covers this ground separately, with codes for reductant pressure too low and too high and for pump control faults, so ask for those to be checked before the dosing valve itself is condemned. This is the most expensive end of the system, which is why it belongs last.
Worth knowing: Do not ignore an AdBlue fault. These systems have to work by law, and VAG cars respond to unresolved SCR faults with warnings, then a limited number of remaining starts, and eventually a car that will not start at all. Clearing the code without fixing the cause simply restarts that countdown, and the countdown does not care that the code on your reader had the wrong wording on it.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Common questions
What does P201A mean?
P201A means Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2 Unit 1. The sensor still works, but its reading has drifted outside the window the ECU expects. That usually means a tired sensor or a problem with what it is measuring, not a broken wire.
Can I drive with P201A?
The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
