P2048–P2057 Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Low Bank 1 Unit 1
The voltage on this circuit is sitting near zero. Typically a short to earth, or a sensor that has failed to its low end.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P2048: Reductant Injection Valve Circuit Low Bank 1 Unit 1.
P2048 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor. If the reading jumps to full scale, the wiring is fine and the sensor has failed low.
- Check the sensor's 5V supply and its earth before condemning the sensor itself.
What actually causes this on a VAG
The AdBlue metering valve on bank 1 injects a measured spray of AdBlue into the exhaust ahead of the SCR catalyst. This code means its control circuit is being pulled to earth when it should not be - an electrical short, not a fluid problem. Because the valve sits underneath the car in the exhaust heat and the road spray, the short is more often in the wiring than in the valve itself.
Most likely causes, in order
- Wiring shorted to earth against the underbody. Look where the loom passes the exhaust heat shields, the subframe, and any point a clip has gone missing and let the wire drop onto hot or sharp metal. A single rubbed-through spot touching the bodyshell or exhaust gives exactly this fault, and the damage is usually visible once the area is clean.
- Water or corrosion inside the valve connector. Standing water in the plug bridges a control pin to earth, which is why this fault often appears in winter or after driving through deep water. Unplug, dry and clean the connector, then see whether the fault stays away in wet conditions.
- Valve coil shorted internally. Once the harness is proved clean, the valve itself is the remaining candidate. Unplug it and clear the code: if the fault changes to an open-circuit complaint, the short was inside the valve; if it returns as a short to earth with the valve disconnected, the harness is still at fault.
- Damage from previous work underneath. Exhaust, DPF, SCR or suspension work all mean this loom gets moved or unclipped. If the fault followed a garage visit or a recent repair, inspect what was disturbed before buying parts.
Worth knowing: The metering valve is not a cheap part and it gets replaced on this code more often than it needs to be. Always disconnect it and confirm whether the short is still present before ordering one. Read the rest of the fault list too - an unresolved SCR fault eventually escalates through the driver inducement system to a refusal to restart the engine, so this is not one to leave sitting. If the valve does turn out to be dead, refill only with AdBlue to the correct specification: contaminated fluid ruins injectors and the SCR catalyst, though it causes blockage and crystallisation rather than the electrical short this particular code describes.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
