P2252–P2255 O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 1
The voltage on this circuit is sitting near zero. Typically a short to earth, or a sensor that has failed to its low end.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P2252: O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 1.
P2252 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor. If the reading jumps to full scale, the wiring is fine and the sensor has failed low.
- Check the sensor's 5V supply and its earth before condemning the sensor itself.
What actually causes this on a VAG
This is the same wideband front lambda sensor circuit on bank 1, but here the ECU sees the negative side of its pumping-current control line sitting lower than it can explain. In practice that points at a short to earth somewhere between the ECU and the sensor, or a sensor that has failed short internally. Like P2251 this is a wiring and sensor complaint, not the ECU telling you the mixture is wrong, so there is no point chasing vacuum leaks, injectors or fuel pressure on the strength of it. The car normally still drives, running on substitute values with the lamp lit.
Most likely causes, in order
- Water or salt in the sensor connector. Moisture bridging between pins pulls the signal down, and given where this plug lives it is one of the commonest findings. Unplug it, look for corrosion or a wet plug body, dry it thoroughly, and check the seal and any harness grommet above it that could be letting water track down the wires into the connector.
- Chafed wire shorting to earthed metal. Where the loom crosses a bracket, heat shield or the gearbox bellhousing, insulation rubs through and the bare conductor touches earth. Inspect the run with the loom flexed. A short to earth that comes and goes with engine movement is a classic and will not show up on a static check.
- Failed sensor with an internal short. If the harness is sound, the sensor itself has shorted internally. That is the expected outcome on an old or contaminated sensor, but it should be the conclusion after the wiring check, not before it.
Worth knowing: Two things kill a brand-new lambda sensor within days. First, silicone: RTV sealant and silicone sprays used on the exhaust or intake while the engine runs poison the sensing ceramic permanently. Second, grease in the plug: these sensors draw their reference air in through their own cable and connector, so packing the plug with grease of any kind blocks that path and the sensor stops reading properly. Fit it dry, and keep silicone away from the job.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
