P2253–P2256 O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 1
The voltage on this circuit is sitting near battery voltage. Typically a short to a positive feed, or a disconnected sensor floating high.
Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
Which code is which
Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition
P2253: O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 1.
P2253 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.
What to check first
Cheapest and fastest checks first:
- Unplug the sensor and check whether the signal falls. If it stays high, suspect the wiring rather than the sensor.
- Check the earth path - a missing earth makes a sensor read high.
What actually causes this on a VAG
Same wideband front lambda sensor circuit on bank 1 as P2251 and P2252, but now the ECU sees that control line sitting higher than it should. Because this circuit already has its own dedicated open-circuit code - P2251, which VAG labels 'open' in as many words - a plain broken wire will usually store that one instead. So read P2253 first as voltage arriving on the control line from somewhere it should not: a short to a powered wire, or a damaged, high-resistance terminal in the connector. The car usually still drives, on substitute fuelling values with worse economy and higher emissions, with the lamp lit.
Most likely causes, in order
- Short to a powered wire. Where the sensor loom is bundled with a heater feed, an injector feed or another live and the insulation has rubbed through, the control line gets pulled up. Look along the run for shiny, flattened or melted sections, anywhere a cable tie has bitten in, and anywhere the loom has been re-taped after previous work.
- Corroded or damaged sensor connector. A corroded, burnt or pushed-back terminal behaves electrically like a partial break and can read high. Unclip the plug, check for green or white deposits and burnt pins, make sure no terminal has been pushed back out of the housing, and confirm the plug latches properly when refitted.
- Failed sensor. An internally damaged sensor gives the same reading. Fair to conclude once the plug and harness have been inspected, and moved, without anything changing.
Worth knowing: A wiggle test separates the two possibilities without buying anything. With the engine idling, put the broadband sensor's live values on screen - VAG lists them as 'Voltage of oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 1 (broadband sensor)' and 'Current of oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 1 (broadband sensor)' - then gently move the sensor loom section by section. A reading that flickers, or a fault that reappears the moment you move a particular length, is a terminal or chafe fault at that spot. A value that sits stubbornly high no matter what you do points at a solid short to power or at the sensor itself.
Reading the code is the easy part
A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.
VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.
