P2452–P245E Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit

Investigate soon

The ECU has logged a fault on P2452. The definition below is the exact wording the standard uses for this code.

Can you drive it? The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.

Which code is which

Same fault, different cylinder or bank — diagnosed the same way. Several set together usually means one shared cause.

The definition

P2452: Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit.

P2452 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain code (the engine or gearbox). Its meaning is set by the carmaker rather than by the SAE standard, so a generic OBD-II reader will often show it as an unknown code or misread it.

What to check first

Cheapest and fastest checks first:

  1. Read the freeze-frame data stored with the fault - engine speed, load and temperature at the moment it logged tell you whether this happens cold, hot or under load.
  2. Check the connector at the part for corrosion, and that it is fully seated.
  3. Clear the code and see whether it returns, and under what conditions.

What actually causes this on a VAG

VAG diesels with a particulate filter carry a small differential pressure sensor that measures how hard the exhaust has to push to get through the filter - VAG's own name for this code is 'Diesel Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Sensor Circuit'. On the usual arrangement two thin pipes run from the sensor down to the exhaust, one tapping in before the filter and one after, so check what your car actually has before you start pulling things off. This code means the ECU has lost a usable electrical signal from that sensor, so it no longer knows how full the filter is. Regeneration is normally suspended while the fault is stored, and you may get a DPF warning alongside the engine light.

Most likely causes, in order

  1. Wet or corroded sensor connector. The sensor is usually bracket-mounted in the engine bay with its plug facing where water can reach it. Unplug it and look for corrosion, damp inside the plug, or terminals that have been pushed back. Dry and reseat before condemning anything.
  2. Broken or chafed sensor wiring. The wiring runs through a hot, vibrating area. Look for insulation that has hardened against a heat shield, rubbed through on a bracket, or been pinched by a previously refitted engine cover or pipe clamp.
  3. Failed sensor. These do fail electrically with age and heat cycling. A fair conclusion once the plug and the wiring run have both been checked and moved without any change to the fault.

Worth knowing: A pressure sensor code is not a blocked filter. If a garage quotes you for a new DPF on the strength of this code, that is a red flag - the sensor and its two small pipes cost a tiny fraction of a filter and are the far more common fault. Get the circuit fixed, then have the filter's real condition read from the ECU's own values: VAG lists them as 'Particle filter, soot mass measured', 'Particle filter, soot mass calculated' and 'Particle filter, oil ash volume'. Ash volume in particular is the one that tells you whether the filter is genuinely near the end of its life, because ash never burns off.

Reading the code is the easy part

A code names the circuit that complained. What tells you why is watching the sensor behind it while the engine runs — and that is where a code reader stops and a diagnostic tool starts.

VAGPULSE reads every module in a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT — not just the engine — shows the live measuring blocks behind this fault, gives you the freeze-frame conditions it was logged under, and clears it once you have fixed it. It also does what a generic OBD reader cannot on a VAG: service resets, coding, adaptations, and Stage 1–3 flashing with your original file saved first.

Prefer to work on your phone? The VAGPULSE Android app is a free download and its demo mode runs against a sample car with no hardware at all, so you can see exactly what it reads before spending anything. Reading your car with it needs the VAGPULSE cable, which comes with the licence.

Common questions

What does P2452 mean?

P2452 means Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit. It is logged when the ECU sees this circuit outside its expected operating window.

Can I drive with P2452?

The engine light will stay on and the car may run in a reduced-power mode. Read the freeze-frame data to see the conditions the fault was logged under.
